We arrived at the party a little after 8 pm. We could hear the music from the street. Everyone was scattered inside and outside. We walked in and everybody stared at us. It could be because they have never seen him before or because they noticed we were matching.
I see Scar hanging in a corner with Austin and the other guys. I pull De'Quan behind me and lead him to the group. "Hey guys!" I scream over the music so they can hear me.
Scar nods to the other guys and motions for me to follow. Scar leads us into a quiet room so we can talk. "That's better. Now introduce us to your friend." Scar says looking at De'Quan.
"De'Quan, this is Scar, Connor, Paul, Austin, and Derrick" I say pointing out each one as I say their name. "Guys, this is De'Quan."
Everyone shakes hands and reintroduces themselves.
"Are you going to be sitting with us De'Quan? We wouldn't mind if you did." Austin says with a smile.
"If it's ok with you. I don't want to intrude." He says shyly.
All the guys nod and smile. We make our way back out to the party. Me and De'Quan go to the middle of the dance floor. I dance and grind on him for a little while before we both become tired. We walk into the kitchen for a drink. I grab a coke and he gets a bottle of water.
We step past drunk people and make our way outside to a swing. It's a beautiful night. The moon was full and the stars were bright. "I didn't think we would end up friends." I say breaking our silence.
"Why not?" He asks.
I look at him and smile. "Because I'm the bad girl that everyone fears and you're the boy that never speaks. I thought we would repel. I actually like hanging out with you, but I want to ask you something."
"What is it?" His eyebrows scrunch together.
"Why did you have makeup on the other day? It looked like it was covering a black eye." I ask cautiously.
"Oh, yeah I had makeup on, this guy hit me when I was walking down the street." He says quickly.
I don't believe him, but I drop the subject. Hopefully he feels comfortable enough with me to tell me one day. We slowly swing until we hear yelling from inside the house. I run into the house and look around. In the back corner I see a girl being beaten by a group of girls.
I rush over and grab one of the girls by the back of the hair. I slam her into the wall. The other girls look at each other. They try to rush at me at the same time, but I duck behind them. I kick one girl in the ribs and hit another one in the temple. The last girl throws her hands up in fear. I look down and see the girl shaking and crying. I try to help her up, but she can't move.
I pick her up bridal style and walk to my car. "De'Quan can you drive? I swear to god, if you hurt my baby I will hurt you." I say glaring at him.
He laughs and nods his head. He gets into the driver's side and I sit in the passenger seat with the girl. She doesn't stop shaking the whole way to my house. I keep thinking about how much De'Quan has helped her. If he wasn't there I would be drunk off my ass. I wouldn't have heard her screams or even be able to help her.
We pull into my driveway and head inside. I take her into the bathroom and have De'Quan set up the guest bedroom.
I lock the bathroom door. "Hey, I'm Kacey. I want you to calm down and relax, okay?" I ask her quietly.
Her breathing evens out and she slowly wipes the tears away.
I sit her up and pull her shirt off. There are purple and black bruises already forming. I slowly touch a part of her ribs and she screams. "It's ok. I think you may have broken your ribs. Does anywhere else hurt?" I ask looking her over.
She turns her arm over which shows a long cut up her arm.
I believe that was the first blow which made her scream out. I pull out a wash cloth and wet it a little. I clean up the dried blood that formed around the cut. I go into the cabinet at the bottom of the sink. I take out some ace bandage and gauze pads.
I put three gauze pads along the cut. I wrap the whole thing in an ace bandage and tightly pin it. I move to her ribs. "This is only temporary and will hurt. You're going to need to see a doctor incase their shattered and need surgery." I say concentrating on her ribs. I start just below the bruising and wrap upward making sure it's tight, but not tight enough to move any of the broken ribs. I wrap it over once more and help her off the counter.
I walk her into the guest room and have her lay down. "I'm going to go call your mom. I'll have her come get you and explain what happened. Just lay down and rest." I say covering her with the blanket.
I walk into the living room. De'Quan hands me her phone. I pull open the emergency dial and find her mom's number.
"Hello?" A woman says.
"Hello? Is this the girl's mom?" I ask calmly.
"No, this is her grandmother. Is she okay?" Her voice seems hesitant.
"Actually, no. I went to a party and found a group of girls beating her. I fought them off and took her to my house. I believe she has a couple broken ribs. I bandaged her up, but she needs to go to a hospital." I say explaining the whole situation.
"What's your address? I'll be over there as soon as possible."
I give her my address and hang up. I sit on the couch and curl up in De'Quan's lap. He strokes my hair gently. I can't help but move into his touch. I look up into his eyes and see them sparkle.
Fifteen minutes of silence gets interrupted by a loud knock on my door. "Hello? Is my granddaughter here?" I hear a woman yell from outside.
I open my door and let her in. I lead her into the back room where her granddaughter is asleep.
She rushes to her granddaughter and looks her up and down. "How bad is she hurt?" She asks quietly.
"It's hard to say. I know that they broke her ribs, but I don't know how many or if they're shattered. I took her here and wrapped them." I say.
"Thank you so much." She gently shakes her granddaughter. When the girl wakes up she jumps into her grandmother's embrace. They hug for a few minutes before they separate.
"Take her to the hospital as soon as you leave. I don't want them healing out of place. If you need me here is my number." I hand them a paper I wrote up earlier.
They nod and walk out the house. I hear their car start up and watch their headlights disappear. I notice the clock says 12 am. I decide it's time for bed and head to the bathroom. I change into my pajama's and brush my teeth. On my way out, I see De'Quan standing next to the door.
"You okay?" I ask as I take in his figure. He is only in boxers hugging a giant comforter in his arms.
"Can I sleep with you tonight?" He asks sheepishly.
"Of course." I smile and grab his hand. I pull him into the bedroom and lock the door. It was always a habit to lock every door including the bedroom. I lay in bed as he sets himself up. Immediately he wraps me in his embrace, his face firmly pressed into my chest with his arms around my waste.
I smile and run my hands through his hair. I softly sing a lullaby until his breathing becomes normal. I place my head against his and drift off into a deep sleep.
