I spent the night in jail. The odor of pee floats throughout the cell. There are dangerous people in here with me while I get processed. They joked about me being here because of resisting arrest. When I told them about beating a girl unconscious, they immediately backed off.

"Kacey Brown." The guard called out.

"Right here." I say walking up to the gate.

"The charges have been dropped. The judge still wants you to take an anger-management class." He unlocks the gate and hands me the paper as I walk away.

I go outside and meet De'Quan in the car. "You okay baby?" I ask as I sit in the passenger seat.

"Yeah, I couldn't sleep last night because I missed you." He says laying his head on my shoulder.

"Come on. Let's go home. I stink."

He laughs and pulls out of the parking lot.

I always miss driving the long-twisted roads. Nature always makes me feel safe. I watch as the trees fly by in a blur and the sky blends into the tree line.

I almost jump out the car as we pull into the driveway. I didn't shower in the prison. I run into my house and to the bedroom. I stop as I pass through the edge of my bedroom door. I turn around and look at the door handle. I always lock my bedroom door, but my door automatically opened today.

De'Quan goes into the bedroom and goes to the bedroom.

"Do not move." I warn him as I step lightly into the room.

"What's wrong?" He asks. His face shows confusion and fear.

"My door was unlocked. I always lock the door. I need you to stay still while I look around." I creep toward the bed and listen to any sounds. I don't hear anything near the bed, so I move toward the bathroom. I step inside. My shower is open, so I peek inside, and nothing seems off. The rest of the bathroom is clear, so I go back to the bed. "I don't see anything wr—" Th explosion from behind my back cuts me off and throws me against the wall in front of me. I hear glass shattering around me and dust covering my face. My vision fades into black.

My eyes flutter open and there's ringing in my ears. I look around at the walls, the dry wall and concrete now scatter the floor and the roof is collapsed. I look around and try to locate anything familiar, but I can't see anything. I push myself off the ground and on to my knees. I feel blood trickle down the side of my face. I can feel cuts all down my body. I look around and see De'Quan motionless.

He was closest to the explosion. His body was covered in debris. He doesn't move.

I slowly walk toward him and drop to my knees. I shake him slightly. "De'Quan, please, wake up." I yell. I turn him over. I see the gash across his forehead and large cuts across his body. I find my phone under the dust and grab it. I call 9-1-1. "Please help me. There's been an explosion and my boyfriend is unconscious. I need someone to come." I yell without her saying a word. I hear my front door open and people step inside. "I have to go." I hang up.

The footsteps echo across what's left of my house. I go to my nightstand and grab my Glock. I load it and cock it. I wait for the feet to start walking toward my bedroom. The door was blown open from the blast, so I hide next to my bed.

The feet get to the edge of my door and stop. I can see the automatic hand guns they are carrying. I stand up and shoot the first one in the chest.

They begin shooting.

I shoot the next guy in the arm and take out the guy behind him. I can hear someone else walking through the front door.

"Police, can anyone hear me?" A man yells out.

"Back here. Please hurry." I yell.

The officer rushes inside the room with his gun pointed. He looks around, then looks at me.

I drop my gun and put my hands up. "Please, my boyfriend is hurt." I say pointing to De'Quan behind me.

He puts his gun away and walks to De'Quan. He checks his pulse, his neck and the rest of his body. He turns him over and holds his neck still.

Paramedics rush into the room and check everybody whose been shot, then rush to De'Quan. They wrap a brace around his neck. They also check his pulse. They put a breathing mask on him and come to check on me. "Do you feel any pain ma'am?" One asks me.

"Just cuts and bruises. I was thrown into the wall." I say showing them the cuts.

They check my pulse and my neck. They put De'Quan on a stretcher and we go to the ambulance. They put him inside.

I sit next to him and hold his hand the whole way to the hospital.
