Late one night I laid in bed, my headphones in, listening to music. I looked across the house gap to see Grace at her desk watching something on her laptop. I smiled to myself and picked up my phone. I dialed her number and after a few moments of ringing I saw her pick up her phone off her desk and answer.

"Hey." She sighed, sounding tired.

"What's wrong?" I asked her.

"My parents got pissed when I told them I invited you over while they were gone. They're super mad and I'm grounded." She sighed.

"Oh." I looked at her. "I'm sorry."

"It's fine. It's only for a week. My parents are assholes lately. They moved me here alone and now they won't even let me talk to the one friend I have."

"So you're not going to sneak out?" I smiled.

"If I did I'd be on house arrest until I'm 30." She laughed.

"That sucks because I was going to invite you over to meet Fish." I said, referring to Katie's hamster.

"Worst week to get grounded." She smiled. I looked across the gap to see her bedroom door open and her Dad walk in. I could hear him talking over the phone.

"Who are you calling?" He yelled at Grace.

"James." She sighed. "I'm allowed to talk to my boyfriend, Dad!"

"Give me your phone." He demanded.

"Dad!" She seemed angry as she talked to him.

"I said give me the phone!" He yelled. She handed him the phone and her voice was muffled but I could see her yelling at him from across the house gap. Mr. Jones walked over to the window facing me and looking right at me while talking to me through the phone he spoke.

"Don't you dare come near my daughter again!" He grumbled and pulled the curtains shut. I heard him hang up and I was left in silence.

I was terrified for her. I was terrified for us. He didn't approve, and I'd have to live with that. I watched for a minute her shadow in the curtain pacing her room, than she left the window area and the lights in her room flashed off.

I didn't see her for a week after that.
