It was August 28th. I had one week until I left for college, left forever. It was three days after my punishment for running away had faded, and all I could think about was her.
I picked up my phone and called her. It was the middle of the day and Mom and Dad were at work. The phone rang for a few moments then she answered.
"Neighbor boy" I could hear her smile as her voice crackled on my side of the phone.
"What are you up to?"
"My parents are gone... you could..... come over, if you want"
"Okay" I smiled.
"Good. I'll see you in 5?"
"Bye Girl next door" I hung up and made my way downstairs and out the front door. It was several steps and I was inside her house.
"One sec!" She called from upstairs. She came down the stairs, drying her hair with a towel, she wore a loose tank top and shorts. She had clearly just got out of the shower. "Hey" she smiled, putting a hand on my chest as I put my arms around her.
"I've missed you" I smiled, kissing her lips, feeling the water from her hair drip on my chest. For a moment she twirled a piece of hair near my neck. "I've missed this" I whispered.
"Good thing your here then" She bit her lip and I slowly backed up towards the couch. She straddled me, her hands on my neck, she pushed me down so she was on top of me.
"Okay Miss Eager"
"Shut up" She laughed, kissing me again.
Her lips were pressing against mine, my hands on her waist when she stopped mid-kiss
"...James"
"Grace"
She crawled off me, looking serious now.
"Grace...?"
"Never mind" She sighed. "Can we..." She paused "Upstairs?"
I laughed, twirling a piece of hair in my fingers.
"Whatever you want, girl next door" I whispered. She giggled and our lips pressed back together as we stumbled up the stairs to her room.
I woke up with her in my arms. She had thrown on one of my sweatshirts and our arms were tangled together as we lay over the sheets on her bed. I smiled and slowly crawled out of bed. I put back on my pants and looked at the clock on her bedside table: 2:39 am.
I kissed her cheek gently before I left, letting her sleep. I made the trip down the stairs and out the door, smiling to myself. As I entered my house, I shut the door behind me and headed upstairs to work on an essay that should've been done weeks ago. Out the window, in her bedroom I could see her sleeping.
I didn't type a single word that day. I was just too damn in love.
