Trigger warning (I suppose)
Also, I apologize in advance.
Gold was sitting in his room in his almost empty house. His parents were gone, they were out to dinner together with some family members in celebration of his mom being released from the hospital. But he wasn't allowed to come with because his father explained it would've been better if he stayed at home. There almost only adults there anyways. So, he did as advised and stayed at home with the dog. As he was reading through his favorite comic for the 20th time, he heard his dog bark.
Gold rolled his eyes, he figured it was a squirrel outside, taunting his dog or something. Exbo always wanted to chase anything that moved.
A minute goes by, and the barking hadn't stopped. Gold raised his eyebrow. What was making Exbo so agitated? He sighed and put the comic away on his bed. He stood up, stretched his arms and got out of his room, walked down the stairs and turned on the light in the hallway. He looked into the dark living room that was only dimly lit by the light of the hallway. Exbo was barking at the window.
"Exbo? What are you doing?" Gold asked the canine. Exbo looked around and stayed silent for a few seconds before he ran out of the living room into the hallway, barking furiously behind Gold at the door. Gold flinched at the sudden movement and before he could process what happened. A loud and ear straining shattering noise was heard behind him. He yelped and snapped his head towards the noise to see a figure with a black mask on, breaking through his window into his house with their hands intruding his home. When the limbs reached out for him Gold screamed out in terror.
The window was a long vertical one and matched the door in length but was half of the width. The intruder got inside quickly. Gold froze in place but when they took a step in the house, forced himself to run out of fear and out of instinct. He sprinted away, into the living room. Trying his best not to care about the broken glass that was cutting into his feet and making every step burn. He opened the door to the kitchen and opened the knife drawer.
A butcher knife.
That should do.
His hand shakily reached out towards the knife and when he made contact with it, he gripped it tightly. He turned around and stood in front of Exbo to protect his companion. He was waiting for the intruder to come get him so he could strike.
He laughed nervously, his voice trembling intensely and cracking halfway through the forced and straining chuckle.
Painfully slow footsteps were heard and they were headed for the kitchen. The suspension was so excruciating that he could feel physical pain in his chest because of it. It was hindering his breathing, burning his throat and making his heart beat so hard he could hear it. His eyes were fixated on the door opening because he was scared that if he were to look away, the intruder would appear in front of him to strike.
Not moving, he spoke up in a whisper:
''D-don't be scared Exb-bo. I-I'll take care of i-''
and stopped.
In front of him stood a tall figure. There he was, face to face with someone that was going to hurt him. Badly. Exbo barked and barked in order to threaten the person in front of him before Exbo suddenly ran forward towards the masked figure. Gold widened his eyes, terrified. He reached out to the dog but couldn't convince himself to move an inch further than that.
Through the confident façade he had always been putting up without knowing, he pretended to be the 'Gold' everyone knew. In actuality, he coward that couldn't fend for anyone, how much he tried to help.
Nobody knew of this. Not even Gold himself.
The dog jumped up and attacked and as if someone cruelly decided to put the part of the movie where the dog gets hurt, everything started to play in slow-motion. Exbo bit the figure in the arm but got shook off. Exbo hit the ground with force and laid there, struggling to get up and run.
The man kneeled down and punched the dog as it let out a whimper. With the last bit of energy Exbo had, they attacked again on the man's face. They stumbled backwards and the mask fell off. They got up again and pulled out a knife.
Gold's eyes widened, he wanted to scream out bloody murder but he couldn't. He was in complete shock. He was scared that the attacker wouldn't show mercy if he screamed. He started crying as his companion's neck was slit open. Exbo let out one last, heartbreaking cry almost as if saying 'sorry' for not being able to protect Gold and blood started flowing out of the freshly cut wound. His black and golden colored fur was stained red and the floor beneath him was hidden underneath a puddle of blood and Gold swore that he could feel a stab through his chest right then and there but that was just his imagination.
Gold looked at the corpse of his dog and then met the eyes of the murderer. Green colored eyes with no sign of humanity in them. But they weren't just green. Peridot, emerald, jadeite with a shine similar to a pearl.
It was all a lie.
They were disgusting. There was no empathy, sympathy, regret, hesitation, guilt, sadness or even anger. A lack of emotion was all there was.
Anger shot through Gold's veins. He wanted to scream. How could they do something like this so casually? How could they murder his most trusted companion like it was the most normal thing in the world? Frustration and intense emotion were blurring his vision for a brief moment before it took a whole different turn.
The boiling sensation of his rage turned ice cold when he recognized the face of the murderer. His head started pounding. This didn't make any sense.
''Why would you-...'' He spoke in an inaudible whisper.
Green started approaching Gold with a blank expression. He tightened his grip on the blood-stained knife in his hands. Gold backed away and felt his heart stop as his back met the kitchen wall.
Dead end.
''Please... P-please I-I'm begging you...! I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die.'' He repeated the last few words over and over again as his own mantra. He meekly held out the knife in front of him and tried to stay somewhat composed. But when he saw Exbo's lifeless body again, he felt more tears run down his face. His arms were trembling and his grip was loosened. He was too weak, he'd never be able to save himself in front of a relentless killer. He couldn't kill someone if it meant saving himself if he couldn't even save his loved ones. The word 'pathetic' popped up in his head.
He dropped the weapon and felt his heart rate speed up even more when he heard the loud clattering of the metal meeting the tiles. There was no way he'd escape. He fell to the ground and scrambled as far away from his classmate as he could. He closed his eyes and let out a single whimper as Green raised his weapon.
"Goodbye."
