Once we finished breakfast we set off again. This time we were shrouded in silence. Nobody said anything. I think we were all too busy thinking about what Nathan and Lilith said. If I have a chip does that mean people will come after me? Or is it only if I show what my chip is?
"I have a hotel room rented out at the Bystander's Inn" Nathan said breaking the silence that had been around us for about thirty minutes. "Lilith can stay with me there"
"Ok" I said wondering where the heck the Bystander's Inn was since I had never been there or seen it before. I soon found out when we approached a tall building. It looked like an old Victorian house on steroids and above the front door hung a sign that declared it, The Bystander's Inn.
"Are you sure you'll be ok? Evan said to Nathan and Lilith as they started to walk away.
"Yes. I'm sure we'll be fine" Lilith responded, she looked at Nathan and intertwined her fingers with his. "Bye" she said. They then left without another word.
"So."Jackson said, "How far are we from your house?"
"About 10 minutes away." Evan told him as we continued to walk down the dirt road ahead.
Eventually we got to Evan's and my house and said goodbye to Jackson and told him we would see him at school on Monday.
As soon as we got inside we both had the same idea and went into the kitchen. Our parents stood there with cups of coffee, still in their pajamas.
"Mom, Dad," I said," We need to talk about something."
Evan nudged my arm and shook his head. I could tell this wasn't particularly what he wanted to talk about first thing on a Saturday morning but it sure as hell was what I wanted to talk about, even if it was Saturday.
"Sure, sweetie, what's up? My mom said sitting down at the table, my dad following soon after.
I hesitate for a moment wondering how I bring up the fact that I know that they gave me up to some crackpot organization to test something they didn't even know the full story to? I mean, how am I supposed tell my code-loving parents that I almost got caught running away from authorities with some rogues? I thought of telling them what really happened last night but I had a feeling that: "Hey mom and dad my brother and I went looking for a crazy girl we spotted in our yard last night, oh and then we ran about 2 miles away from other people that were looking for them, oh, and I almost forgot, I slept in the same room as one of my brother's best friends! wouldn't go down to well so instead I just say "what's a chip?"
My parents give each other an alarming look before my mom answers, "What do you mean?
"Cora..." Evan warns which told me that I should probably stop talking. But I don't.
"It was something I read at the library a while ago" I say, making eye contact with my mom, and then with my dad. They looked as if they didn't know what to tell me.
"Honey," my mom said, "Now really isn't the time"
"No, Katheryn" My dad said. "We should tell them."
I felt Evan tense up beside me. "Tell us what, Dad?" He asked
"Cora," My mom said, "Evan," Her voice was shaking. "You might want to take a seat for this."
