Evie stood at the front of the class with a fake smile plastered to her features. Her heart ached deep within her chest but she tried not to let it show. The teacher praised her for her good grades and outstanding accomplishments and overcoming the struggle that was her life. That despite her twin brother's, Ian, death; she managed to still get into an elite college, finish high school at the top of her class, and so much more.
Mateo stared at her from the back of the classroom. His bright green eyes, dark curls, and leather jack only added to his dark personality. What separates him from the rest of the class was he was the only one who knew that the girl being praised, was also the girl that called Mateo in the middle of the night in tears. They shared pain, even though different kinds. They helped each other. Mateo clenched his fists in worry when the teacher mentioned Evie's brother. Evie's façade cracked and started to crumble. Her smile faltered, tears pricked her eyes. She finally gave up, dropped the fake smile as a tear ran down her cheek and she whispered to herself,
"I can't do this anymore."
Before anyone could react she dashed out of the room. Mateo fallowed quickly after her ignoring the teacher's commands to sit down. The only thing that concerned Mateo at that moment was Evie. He cared for her, and he hopped she felt the same; but he wouldn't dare bring that up until she was better. And right now, she wasn't.
Mateo found Evie sitting under the stair well in a janitors closet. He remembered that this was the closet that her and her brother used to hide out in when they needed to get away. Evie had taken him here just a few weeks ago when she had a panic attack after the assembly for her and her family.
Evie didn't know where to go so she let her body take her to the place she felt most comfortable in at this God forsaken place. Sobs racked her body as she sat on the cold tiles in the janitors closet. When she heard the door creak open she brought her knees to her chest and hugged herself. The person sat next to me, their long legs stretched in front of them. Not saying a word.
"Mateo, you don't have to be here." I choked out. "I know." Was all he said. The silence returned, save for Evie's sniffles. Evie lent onto Mateo when she was sure he wouldn't leave her. His body stiffened at her touch but quickly softened like it always does when she broke. Mateo pulled Evie's body onto his lap so he could hold her.
Another round of cries escaped from her as she clung to him and tears poured like rain from her eyes. Mateo didn't say anything, he just let her cry and rubbed her back. Holding her was the best he could do, and she appreciated it. After not being able to cry anymore she sat up, straddling her companion. He held her hips not wanting her to move. They just stared at each other.
"Thank you." She said, her voice barely above a whisper. "You're welcome." He replied. "Mateo?" She asked. Mateo hummed and darted his eyes to her lips. "You and me, we are" Her voice trailed off and their lips came close. Their breaths swirled together, "Are you sure about this?" Mateo said, his lips dusting Evie's. "Yes." She said.
Mateo didn't hesitate to push his lips to hers. Her hands held his head close to her and Mateo's left hand held the back of her neck while his right arm held her waist. Their lips moved in sync and their hearts raced in time to each other's. This kiss wasn't lustful or needy. It was passionate and caring. Each held the other like they could brake at any moment but tight so they wouldn't fly away.
The kiss broke and they laid their foreheads on the other. They sighed in unison and then the room was quiet. Words weren't needed in that moment. The kiss said everything needed. All they needed was each other to get them through the day.
