Two weeks later
In two weeks, four more kids have turned up dead. Hazel hasn't seen River in a few weeks. Even, Sleet hasn't been harassing Emily. Hazel has managed to cope with the loss of her friend. River has been busy dealing with other wolf packs. As a result he hasn't been to school for over a week. Emily, Jake, and Hazel are sitting in their last period waiting on the teacher."They figured out what killed those kids." Jake purposely avoided saying Sandy.
"What?" Emily asked.
"Wolves. Looks like big wolves too. Maybe uh you know wolves." Jake answered.
"Are you suggesting werewolves?" Hazel asked a little snappy.
"Yes." Jake whispered.
"Werewolves did not kill those kids. There's not any rouges, lone wolves, and my pack would never do such a thing." Hazel grounded out.
Jake held up his hands in defense. The teacher walked in and started the lesson. All through last period Hazel was stewing. Hazel was going straight to the pack house after school. When, the bell rang Hazel ordered Jake to take Emily home. Hazel, knew Emily didn't want to see Sleet; she wasn't in the mood to deal with the unrequited love. Hazel drove to the pack house and went straight to River's office.
"River! People are saying werewolves are killing kids!" Hazel barged into his office.
Two men plus River and Sleet looked up at Hazel;" No werewolf would do that." River said.
"That's what I said. Why are all the kids dying?" Hazel asked as she walked over to his desk.
"I don't deal with human affairs." River shrugged and he looked back down at the paperwork he had.
Hazel pulled the paperwork from his hands, "One, of the kids that died was my friend. Concern yourself with human affairs."
River sighed, "I have no authority in human matters."
"Find a way to help!" Hazel growled.
"It's not that simple." River argued frustrated.
"Werewolves are behind the killings. You don't want to tell me because you think it would put me danger." Hazel said after a moment of silence.
River looked down and no one spoke for a long time.
"I'm Luna, I should know these things. You can't keep them from me. I can protect myself!" Hazel walked out of his office fuming.
River thought it best just to let it go. Hazel, wouldn't calm down eventually. She's read enough werewolf books to know he was just trying to protect her. Hazel however, was not going to let it go. As Hazel was walking out she noticed two wolves dragging a black bag. It looked like a body bag. Hazel stood watching as the wolves carried the bag inside. As they picked the bag up a hand slid out of the bag. Hazel gasped, no wonder River didn't want to tell her about the wolf killings. River was the one who was behind them all. Hazel quickly drove home and told Emily.
"I'm sure that's not true." Emily tried to calm Hazel.
"Emily, why else would they have a body?" Hazel asked.
"Umm, maybe it was a pack member that died?" Emily shrugged her shoulders.
"I doubt that." Hazel frowned. She couldn't ignore the fact that River was killing people.
"Sleet wouldn't let River do that." Emily defended them.
"Sleet? Omg! You like him!" Hazel squealed happily.
Emily looked down, "Maybe."
"You do! You do!" Hazel bounced excitedly.
"He's kinda sweet." Emily played with her hair.
"When did this happen?" Hazel asked quickly.
"About a week ago. He's been coming around and we went for a walk." Emily blushed slightly.
"Did you kiss him!?" Hazel demanded.
"What!? No, not yet at least." Emily snapped out of her little trance.
"But you will!" Hazel was practically shaking Emily.
"Okay, okay, calm down." Emily got Hazel to calm down some.
"When are you next going out?" Hazel asked much calmer.
"Tonight." Emily started playing with her hair.
"Wait, you can't do that."
"Why not!?" Emily asked a little upset.
"River is having his pack kill people." Hazel said exasperated.
"He's not killing people!" Emily was beyond frustrated with Hazel.
"I'm sorry, I know what I saw. I saw a body being loaded into the house. I'm going to bed." Hazel walked off while Emily fell back in frustration.
River rubbed his forehead as he stared at the paperwork in front of him. His highschool wasn't the only place where kids were getting frequently attacked by wolves.
"I don't think wolves are behind these attacks." River told Sleet.
"I agree, these don't look like wolf attacks. What are you going to do about Hazel?" Sleet asked as he flipped through photographs.
"What do you mean?" River asked confused.
"She was really mad when she left." Sleet grabbed another stack of paperwork.
"She'll get over it. I don't want her poking around in this. She could get hurt. I know she can take care of herself, but if witches are behind this she won't be able to defend herself. I don't think these attacks are human." River sighed heavily.
"I don't know." Sleet studied the photos.
The attacks were becoming more frequent.
"If the attacks don't stop soon people are going to start hunting wolves." River groaned.
"They already killed a member of our pack." Sleet sighed.
"I know, I know." River threw down his paperwork.
"They don't leave anything behind! I bet you we can't pick up a scent because of the school cafeteria! The forest reaks of school lunch. I swear that disgusting scent travels everywhere." Sleet huffed.
"I don't understand how Emily can eat the school lunch." River sighed and decided to turn in for the night.
They were getting no where and sleep deprivation wasn't going to help anything.
