• CHAPTER FOUR •

I woke up to a sharp vibrating noise at my bedside table.

Groggy, I leaned over and grabbed my cell, briefly glancing at the time before unlocking it. 5:30AM. What the-?

There was a message from Luke waiting:

Hey, Prov. Wanna come over?

I blinked hard, trying my hardest not to fall asleep again as I sent him a reply:

What on earth are you up at five in the morning for? On a Saturday?

A minute later, I got an answer:

The One Direction boys are coming today to talk with us about touring. I wanted you to be here.

A few seconds later, he added:

I'm also really nervous, and I've got no idea what to wear. Help me out?

That woke me up.

I'll be right over, I hurriedly texted him, forcing myself out of my warm bed. I shivered when my feet hit the cold ground.

Fifteen minutes later, I was knocking lightly at his door. "Luke?" I whispered, and the door flew open.

"Prov!" he cried, and then pulled me into a warm hug. "You came."

"I said I would," I told him with a smile. "So what's up?"

"I just, I'm so nervous, I've been a wreck, and my mum just keeps going back to sleep and Calum told me to screw off and Michael won't even answer his phone and Ashton said he'd be here soon," Luke rushed, filling me in. "I don't know what to do."

I looked at him. He was still in pajamas, his hair was a mess, and he looked terrified. "First, let's get you ready," I decided. "When are they coming over?"

"10:30 today," he said, and my jaw dropped.

"So you woke up four and a half hours early? No wonder Michael's still sleeping," I said.

He grinned sheepishly. "Just anxious, you know?"

"Yeah," I said. "So Liz said she'd let you go?"

Luke nodded, grinning. "Yep! Which reminds me, I have something to ask you," he said as we walked into his room.

I sat on his bed and he shut the door. "What is it?" I asked.

He flopped down onto his bed beside me. "I did promise you that I'd take you with me on tour, right?"

My eyes widened. "Luke, what the hell?"

Luke sat up now, his expression excited. "Yeah! Remember? Back when you first heard me play? I know we were just pretending, but I'm still keeping my promise."

I had to force myself to close my mouth, which had dropped open. I struggled to find words. "Luke, that's really sweet, but-"

"But what?" he asked, his smile fading.

I winced. I hated hurting him. "I just don't see how that makes sense. I'm still in school, and I just don't see how it'd work. You're starting a career, and I'm so proud and excited that I've been here every step of the way."

"But you won't come with me."

I couldn't stand looking into his eyes anymore. "No. I can't."

"What happened to the 'of course I'll come with you' Prov?" Luke asked, sounding miserable. "I was looking forward to living my dream with my best friend."
