• CHAPTER SIX •
Luke's POV
I should've been psyched out beyond belief. I should've been yelling and grinning and unable to sit still from excitement.
So why did I feel like crying?
Calum and Michael were already wreaking havoc on the airplane. Considering that we hadn't even taken off yet, this was going to be a very long plane ride to America.
"Hey, mate, what's wrong?" Ashton asked, taking a seat next to mine.
I sighed. "I don't know. I should be excited. Why am I not excited?"
Ash frowned. "What d'ya mean?"
I rubbed my face and sighed. "I mean, I always thought that if I ever did go on tour, I'd be going with my best friend, Prov."
Ashton made a quiet noise of comprehension. "And now it's actually happening."
"Just not the way I planned," I agreed morosely, shaking my head. I looked from Ashton, down to my lap, and then back up. "I'm still not excited. I should be."
"Hey, it's okay. I mean, you just left one of your best mates. It's gotta hurt a little. If you were as happy as those idiots over there, I'd actually be more concerned than I am now," Ashton teased, nodding towards Calum and Michael, who were harassing a very frazzled flight attendant.
I managed to smile. "Yeah." I frowned again. "But I just don't understand why she wouldn't come. She was concerned about school, which I get, but Liz could tutor us. I mean, it's not like she wasn't tutored by Liz for the last five years," I muttered.
Ashton rubbed his chin, his expression distracted. "Hmm... ah, speaking of Providence-"
"Luke, honey, we're taking off. Here's your math homework, and I expect it by the end of the flight," Liz said, interrupting Ashton with a textbook and a packet of worksheets.
I grimaced. "Air sickness?" I suggested as an excuse, looking up at my mum.
She grinned and ruffled my hair. "Nice try. Get it done," she ordered, and then went back to her seat.
I groaned. "Great. Math." I looked back at Ashton. "What were you saying about Prov?"
"Nothing," he said, his thumb and index finger still meticulously tracing his jawline.
I considered pushing it, but decided I'd better get started with my math. The faster I got it done, the better. "Algebra II," I said, exhaling a long, agonized breath. "The bane of my existence."
"Better than Precalculus," Ashton said wisely, grinning. "Trust me."
I made a face. "I'll be facing that next year."
"Joy!" Ash said, and I laughed.
Ash left me to do my homework, and I plowed through it for the first three hours of the ride. While my mum was grading it, I joined Ashton, Calum and Mikey, who had somehow managed to smuggle an X-Box onto the flight and had hooked it up to one of the airplane seats, something I didn't even know you could do.
"You can't," Michael replied simply when I asked. "But I did anyways."
"What do you mean?"
Michael was too focused on FIFA to answer. I turned to Ashton, who didn't care for FIFA, and asked, "What does he mean?"
Ashton grinned. "Meaning Michael harassed one of the flight attendants into manipulating the system to allow for his stupid X-Box."
That made Michael pause the game. "Say that about my baby again, you bastard," he snapped, and Calum laughed.
