• CHAPTER THIRTEEN •
It turns out, my hangover took a little bit of time to set in.
It hit me a little past halfway through the agonizingly long plane ride home. My headache, which had been a minor affliction before, slammed into me with the force of a truck. I physically cringed in my seat. "Damn," I whispered, leaning forward to grab my carry-on and digging out a little bottle of Advil.
I downed a couple and tried to fall asleep, leaning against the window. The glass was cool on my cheek, but it offered little relief to my pounding headache.
Nine hours later, I staggered off of the plane. I managed to get my luggage and stumble into my mum's car before I absolutely broke down.
"You're only seventeen," my mum chided, shaking her head.
"But my boyfriend is almost legal," I muttered.
I swear we almost died right then. "WHAT?" my mum shouted, and I cringed, my head throbbing.
"Ow," I winced, pressing my fingers against my temples in vain. "What was that for?"
"Boyfriend? I thought you were going to visit Luke?"
I frowned. Oh, right. I forgot that my mum had never found out about me and Luke falling apart. "I did visit Luke," I said evasively. "But you know I've been talking to Ashton."
Mum let out a long breath. Her fingers gripped the steering wheel tightly, and she looked ahead with a fierce expression. "You're dating Ashton?"
The mark Ashton had left on my collarbone burned beneath my shirt. Even though it was covered, I felt like she could still see it. "Yeah," I murmured. "He asked me out."
She glanced at me. "Please don't tell me-" she broke off and continued to stare out the window.
It took a moment for the words to process through my aching head. "Oh God, no, Mum. Definitely not. I- I'm not stupid you know," I said indignantly.
My mum shrugged. "You never know. You were drunk. He could have taken advantage of you," she said. Her voice was still sharp, but she sounded very relieved.
I groaned. "I didn't know hangovers felt this awful."
"This is why you shouldn't drink," she scolded, and I rolled my eyes.
"I'll make note."
I spent the rest of the day sleeping off my hangover, and by the time I'd had breakfast the next day, I was almost as good as new. I was still sort of shaky, but I was well enough to go to Maddie's place.
"Prov! Hey, you're back!" she cried when she opened the door, throwing her arms around me and pulling me into a crushing hug.
"Can't breathe," I gasped, and she released me quickly.
Maddie held me at an arm's length and then grinned at me. "My, my. You're no longer single, are you?"
I flushed. "It was one date-"
She silenced me with a raised eyebrow. "Providence. You know I'm not oblivious to everything, right? Ashton was very clear about his intentions."
My face burned even redder. "Well..."
