THEY'VE COVERED THE BEATLES.
THEY'VE COVERED GREEN DAY.
THEY'VE COVERED TWENTY ONE PILOTS.
THEY'VE COVERED FALL OUT BOY.
THEY'VE COVERED ADELE.
THEY'VE COVERED SO MANY SONGS AND THEY JUST NEED TO STOP.
I WAS A FAN OF KIDZ BOP NOT THAT LONG AGO. I THINK I JUST STARTED REALIZING HOW BAD THEY ARE A FEW MONTHS AGO. Okay, I'm going to turn Caps Lock off for now so I'm not just screaming at you all.
So, I was a fan of Kidz Bop not even a year ago. My dad hated it, rightfully so, my mom thought it was good because the songs were "appropriate", and my brother disliked but not despised them. Well, I'm proud to say that I've matured quite a bit since that time.
I've always had a pretty sheltered life. When I was much, much younger I was completely ignorant, even for my age. At the same time I wasn't sheltered at all and knew too much. See, my mom really wanted to shelter my brother and I from...well, let's just say we weren't even allowed to play Ratchet and Clank until I was, like, nine or ten. My dad, however, had no problem putting on The Lord of the Rings or playing games like Uncharted whatever-the-one-he-was-playing-was-called and Mass Effect 3 in front of us. And then of course there was The Office and stuff...anyway! There's a point to this!
So one song that we listened to growing up was Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day. I didn't realize it had the f word in it until, like, a year ago. Anyway, when I realized that I looked up the Kidz Bop version.
Oh.
Dear.
Mercy.
No comparison. The original was so much better! And that was the first time I felt...well, offended by Kidz Bop. I started discovering other covers they did of songs I love and my dislike for them grew.
Then I found the Beatles album.
A. WHOLE. ALBUM.
OF BEATLES SONGS.
Hey Jude, Hard Day's Night, Let It Be, Octopus's Garden, and so many other amazing songs completely destroyed and disrespected. They didn't even need to cover them! The songs were already appropriate!
So, I started hating them.
Not to long later I got into twenty øne piløts. And lo and behold, Kidz Bop covered Ride and Stressed out.
They didn't change a single lyric in Stressed Out because they didn't need to cover it in the first place! It was already appropriate! And Ride...good gravy.
So the original lyrics are
I'd die for you,
That's easy to say,
We have a list of people that we would take,
A bullet for them,
A bullet for you,
A bullet for everybody in this room,
But I don't seem to see many bullets coming through,
See many bullets coming through,
Metaphorically I'm the man,
But literally I don't know what I'd do.
I'd live for you,
And that's harder to do,
Even harder to say when you know it's not true,
Even harder to write when you know that tonight,
There were people back home who tried talking to you,
But then you ignored them still,
All these questions they're for real,
Like who would you live for,
Who would you die for,
And would you ever kill.Personally I love these lyrics. It's clearly saying that it's easy to say you'd give your life for someone but living for someone is much harder. It's meaningful and, at least in my opinion and at the risk of sounding cringey, deep.
Kidz Bop...didn't get it. At all.
I'd sing for you,
That's easy to say,
We have a list of people that we would take,
A song for them,
A song for you,
A song for everybody in this room,
But I don't seem to see many songs coming through,
Songs coming through,
Metaphorically I'm the man,
But literally I don't know what I do.
I'd sing for you,
And that's hard to do,
Even harder to say when you know it's not true,
Even harder to write,
When you know that tonight,
There were people back home who tried talking to you,
But then you ignored then still,
All these questions they're for real,
Like who would you live for,
Who would you live for,
And would you ever still.Y
eah...
The thing is, the original deals with something younger children (hopefully) don't quite understand yet. All a young child, and I'm talking really young, would know is that the song has bullets and shooting stuff. So I can see why some parents wouldn't want their kids to listen to that. Kind of. Maybe.
But the Kidz Bop strips it of it's meaning. It's just...empty now. Not to mention that it makes no sense. At all.
They've let stuff much, much worse slip through the cracks before. Take a listen to the Kidz Bop Moves Like Jagger. Apparently they don't know what a metaphor is. And if you look up Kidz Bop lyric changes or Worst Song Covers...well, you'll find stuff.
They also covered a couple Fall Out Boy songs. I've recently been getting I to FOB's music more lately. I first discovered them because Immortals was in Big Hero 6.
They covered Centuries and Uma Thurman. And just...no.They tried to cover Adele. Yeah, you can guess how well that went
They covered Castel on the Hill by Ed Sheeran. They change this innocent lyric, "Had my fist kiss on a Friday night," to "Had my fist love on a Friday night."
THAT IS NOT BETTER, THAT IS SO MUCH WORSE! ESPECIALLY WITH KIDS WHO HAVEN'T EVEN HIT PUBERTY YET SINGING IT!They covered This is Halloween from A Nightmare Before Christmas. I wanted to strangle something it was so bad.
Let it go. That was already a Disney song! It was already for glisten, but at least the original was actually good! Overplayed, but good. I thought they did songs to male them kid friendly, not because they're popular. Sheesh. Like, this one's extra unnecessary.
I still check up on the new ones that come out, just out of curiosity.
They covered Believer by Imagine Dragons. I love that song! Whenever I come across a Kidz Bop cover of a song that I'm familiar with I listen to it.
Oh sweet cheese on crackers. Oh dear mercy. Heck. Other alternatives to cuss words.
It was so mind-blowingly bad.
I can't even describe.
Kidz Bop just needs to stop. It's creepy when they sing songs that were written to be for adults. It's insulting when they take amazing songs and destroy them. It's irking when they take meaningful songs and change them to make them meaningless. Just stop.
Oh, look up Kidz Bop Fall Out Boy Dance, Dance. Kidz Bop is not only a butt to the songs, but to the bands as well.
See you, Fanfares.
