We made small talk back to my car. When Gavin entered the car after me, he noticed that I was waiting on him. Without the key in the ignition. "Are you not going to put the key in the ignition?" Gavin asked curiously.
"Not until you put on your seat belt." I replied with a bit of pain in my words. I looked at Gavin and then turned away. I couldn't look at him, not like this.
"You obviously have a reason behind this. If you don't mind me asking, what's the reason?" he said as he was buckling his seat belt.
"My" my voice failed me. I coughed the tears back and looked straight ahead of me. "My friend, James, died in a car accident in '08 because he didn't wear a seat belt. It's-it's all my fault! We were hammered and I was driving. I wasn't thinking and just jumped in the car with him along. I was going 90 in an abandoned road that I found a few nights before. My vision was blurred from the drinks and I didn't see the dead tree that was 30 feet away. It's all my fault" I explained with tears running down my face.
Gavin didn't say anything. He didn't move, I swear he wasn't even breathing. I didn't hear the soft noises that usually filled the still air.
"When James went flying out of the window" I continued, " I managed to stumble out of the car towards him. I took two steps forward and fell. I fucking fell and didn't get back up! I left him there." I wiped my tears on my sleeve and sniffed. After taking two deep breaths I turned toward Gavin and smiled. "Sorry I'm such a bitch. Let's just go to dinner."
Gavin did something I wasn't expecting. He leaned over and hugged me. My shoulder quickly got wet; he-he was crying. Gavin Free was crying because of me! Damn it! We stayed like that for about a minute. Gavin let go and smiled.
No other words were shared on the way to the restaurant.
We walked into Pomme de Terre and we were greeted by a women about 20 or so. "Would you like a table?" She asked with her Eastern accent. I knew she would smile at a joke if I cracked one. So, I did.
"No, I would like to eat on the floor please. Carpet for two please." I jokingly said smiling.
"Come with me" she replied laughing. I turned to Gavin and I saw his also smiling face. 'Adorable!' I shook my head at that thought. We walked in silence to our table.
We were seated and the woman said that our waiter would be with us shortly. Like the woman explained, our not waiter but waitress, came and took our drink orders. Gavin got moscato with a strawberry and I got a martini.
While we were waiting for our waitress to come back for our meal orders a young girl, about 15, came over with a 16 or 17 year old male dragging behind. "Hi, my name is Alicia and this is James." Alicia said gesturing toward James.
I guess I made a face of pain when she said James. Gavin nudged my foot to let me know.
"I'm a huge fan. I was wondering if you could sign this for me Mr. Jones?" Alicia asked polietly. She handed me her phone and a Sharpie. Yes, her phone.
"Just call me Michael." I said while taking her phone to sign it. I signed her phone and handed it back.
"Would you guys like a picture?" Gavin asked.
"Would you?" Alicia replied.
"Sure." Gavin took the picture of Alicia and I with her phone and handed it back.
"Thank you and have an amazing dinner." She said as she was walking back toward the direction she came talking to James.
I smiled and said "You too" before she was out of ear shot.
"Famous much?" Gavin asked. He laughed at his own shitty joke.
