People could be so judgemental at times, and that it something you hated.
You didn't understand why people just couldn't keep their thoughts to themselves. It wasn't their life so they had no reason to give an input.
Despite the way you thought of it, you still lived in a small town and that meant gossip got around fast.
It was difficult to get away from some of the disapproving glares or the worried looks from those close to you.
You had been dating Jefferson for a few months, and those who didn't know him had convinced themselves that he was some shut in madman that lived in the big mansion all by himself.
Those who did know him...well, their opinion wasn't much different.
You were beyond happy with him. He made you happy and you saw a different side to him, whereas your friends were worried for you.
Jefferson had agreed to pick you up from Granny's that afternoon, as you worked down the road, and then drive you back to his place for dinner.
You were sat with Belle, Ruby and David in the diner whilst you all had something to drink.
They were all aware that Jefferson was coming to pick you up, but they didn't seem too happy about you actually going with him.
"Are you sure he's good for you?" Belle asked completely out of nowhere.
You looked to her, still having your hands around your mug. "Of course."
"He's strange Y/N," David stated in what he must have thought was a caring tone, when in actual fact it came across quite rudely.
"No, he isn't."
Ruby sighed, wrapping her arm around your shoulder. "We're just worried about you."
"Well you don't need to be," a voice you recognised quite well chimed in.
You looked up to see Jefferson standing by your table with his arms crossed.
David sighed and looked to Jefferson. "This conversation doesn't concern you."
Jefferson scoffed. "I think you'll find that it does," he told David. "After all, you are telling my girlfriend that she shouldn't be with me, when it is her choice who she decides to be in a relationship with."
"You're not right for her," Belle spoke up.
Jefferson didn't answer her, but turned to you and held out his hand with a hint of a smile on his face.
You retuned the smile as you took his hand and stood up.
"Guys, I love all of you but you need to accept my choice, okay?"
None of them gave you a response, so you walked out of the diner with Jefferson by your side.
Once the two of you were outside, Jefferson opened your car door for you before he went around to the driver's side.
You could tell that what your friends had said annoyed him, and he had every right to be annoyed.
Reaching across the centre console, you placed your hand on his thigh. "Don't listen to them, please."
He sighed and started the engine, beginning to drive. "If that is what your friends think, then perhaps we shouldn't be together."
"It's not their choice though, it is mine and I choose you."
He smiled and leant over to press a kiss to your lips. "Thank you my dear."
