The sky was cloudless. The air thick, as if you were walking through steam. The sun shines with ferocious power, sweat on the back of my neck rolling down my spine. I open the door down to the change room of the dueling arena and descend. It is much cooler in the stairwell no sun shining from above. Walking into the change rooms I had to get dress. Leo walks out and bumps past me purposefully.
"Do you have an issue with me or this team?" I ask turning to him.
He laughs and turns to his bag.
Shaking my head I walk into the male change room. I change into a black tech suit again and walk back to the middle of the room. I close my eyes and breath through my mouth, henceforth lowering my blood pressure. Diving into my powers I draw it into my system, a cool and powerful surge of energy pulsating through me. Taking a sip of water I walk to the doors as the announcer starts to countdown.
Mackenzie and Leo on the far side of each side of the doors, Cassian stands to my right and Cassia and Chelsea to my left.
The door opens. As we had discussed briefly after our practice Cassian lifts a wall of stone shielding us. Heat blares around us as fire licks around the edges of the wall.
"The fire member is strong," I tell the others. Everyone besides Mackenzie and Leo nod and we begin our devised attack. Leo drops the wall and the four of us each send out a strong surge of our power.
Earth, Water, Air, and Ice fly towards the opposing team and I hear a ding. Someone was out already. As our powers subside me and Chelsea go one way, Cassia and Cassian the others, the thought of Leo and Mackenzie drifting to the back of my head. It turned out to be the Water Elemental who was eliminating leaving me with either a fire or lightning elemental to duel. I could beat both. But this was a team, not just me. I duck under a bolt of Lightning that would have hit my head.
Standing I make up my mind. Running towards a boy, tall but fairly frail he relied mostly on his powers, not his physical strength, and so did I, though I was fairly good at hand to hand it was by no means my strength. Sliding across the dirt ground, dust forms in my wake as I pass him and erect myself to a standing position. I bring my leg up and kick his back.
He falls to the ground but turns quickly and sends a jolt of yellow light at me. My arm burns as it hits me I clench it in shock. He sits and flies towards me. His lengthy body pushes me down, his strength surprising. I put my onto his forearm and send a trail of ice down his arm. He roars in pain and falls off as I sit and continue to freeze his arm. Ice now coating it completely I start making it colder and colder until it should start burning. He falls limp.
I turn in time to see a rock hurtle towards me.
Darkness embraces me.
I wake in my room. My lights were off the room a sea of darkness. I push out of bed and feel for the light switch on the wall. Finding it, the lights flicker on and I jump back. Nora sits in the armchair in the corner of my room sleeping. She wears gray sweatpants and a baggy sweater, her legs tucked under her. Under her eyes are dark, her hair a mess. It was odd to see her so vulnerable. It was odd to see her in my room... I grab a folded blanket from under my bed and spread it out. Walking over to her I rest the blanket atop her short frame. A small smile crawls on her lips but fades. I feel my own lips tug into a smile and I turn, slipping back into my own bed.
