Our hands held tight as the waves crashed below us. "Happy Birthday." Nora smiles. Not very many people knew when my birthday for more than one reason. I didn't need the attention firstly, my life was already under constant monitoring and it was also just another day.
"Thank you." I smile catching her eyes and giving her a peck on the lips.
"I got you a present."
"You didn't have to do that..." I stammer look at the starry sky. It had just struck midnight.
"But I did." She continues. She pulls a picture frame from her jacket and hands it to me.
Dots are splattered across a sky, colours dancing in streams.
"It's a map of the stars when we confessed everything. I got it custom made my this old lady in the village."
"Thank you." I turn to her our eyes locking.
Soon Monday dawns the day's getting hotter and hotter to a point where muscle shirts and shorts along with flip flops were the only way to survive.
"An emergency lock-down drill will be occurring some time today. You should all know what to do, please take this seriously as a treat to the school is not out of the question. Anyone who breaks the laws and implications of this drill will be given detention."
The bell rings signalling the end of gym.
"Remember that tomorrow we will not be up here we will be in the pool." The teacher yells over the talking of the class. Quickly I head into the change room and get changed back into my regular clothes and lock my gym locker, taking my bag from it and head out of the musty room. Spiralling down the staircase I enter Elemental Control, the room with its usual sharp coolness. Taking my seat beside Nora I whisper to her.
"What do we do in a Lock Down drill?"
"Your supposed to ready your powers and get away from windows and doors, not that that is a problem in this room." She answers me, "But if we have an emergency lockdown we are supposed to head to the safe room. There are emergency stairwells on each floor that lead down to them."
"Today will be a study block for your exam next week." Mrs. Caxzalin tells us. "So open your notes and a review package will be handed around."
I do as she says opening my notes after receiving the huge package. Flipping it open I start my work, awaiting the lockdown drill.
About 30 minutes later a siren goes off, the sound like screams. As told by Nora I draw on my powers readying them for combat and follow Caxzalin from out the door. She stands by the door like the other teachers in the hall, herding everyone a certain way. Groups align in the main hallway, a part of the wall had been opened, a staircase barely visible through all the people. I grab Nora's hand as we enter the passage and scale down the metal stairs, the sound of feet like rain on a window. Slowly we make our way down, further and further underground until we reach a large underground cavern. Large tapestries cover the walls. Maybe... just maybe there were passages down here... Once the cavern fills with the thousand or so students in the school we wait, the world as if night had fallen, the sound of hearts beating and the quiet whisper of breathing.
Within the next thirty minutes, however, a teacher stands and calls for the drill. Nora's hand had been in mine the entire time, and because we had to sit with our class, John sat beside as well, studying the ground as if it were some ancient text.
