Chapter 27: Broken Bones like Fallowed Foes

Another summer storm comes. I sit on the rock edge alone, as I watch the chaos of the storm. Leaves blow in the raging wind, lightning crackling, light illuminating and then disappearing faster than it came.

I close my eyes as something breaks. As a crack splinters through a dam and water starts pouring out. No tears come. I'd be stronger for a little while longer. I curl my legs into me and wish for everything to be over.

5000 dead. 5000 brutally murdered by Death Hunters in a small Mirror Realm in the Mediterranean. Children dead. Families dead. Their homes dead.

Ice expands from me, growing across the walls, freezing the rain as it comes close to me. I just wanted it to be over...

But instead, I stand up and leave the storm behind. I leave the pain behind. It'd be over soon enough.

Nora's body is curled into me, her breath warm as she sleeps peacefully

Nora's body is curled into me, her breath warm as she sleeps peacefully. Brennen had texted me the news last night, had told me that the Pocket Realm had been totally destroyed as Troupes from the Dark Empire set off Worvicks, devices that sucked in magic essence.

They were dangerous if used too many of them in Mirror Realms or Pocket Realms, the land itself would collapse, which is exactly what they had done.

Monsters were what they were, the Death Hunters. I didn't care if Nora or John, or anyone was apart of the group, no person should ever be alright with inflicting that much harm.

272 people. Was I even any better than they were?

I hold Nora closer to me, pulling the covers up to my chin.

"What time is it." She murmurs.

"Too early," I reply as I hold her, breathing in her scent.

She turns to look at me and catches the emptiness in my eyes.

"What happened last night?" She asks quietly as if someone could hear me.

"He kissed me," I say as Nora's eyes go wide. "He let everything off his chest, told me his truths and then he kissed me, and I..."

I look away from her, ashamed by my actions.

"I told him to fuck off, I... I left him."

Her hand rests on my chest, her fingering circling lazy circles over my skin.

"Jaxon, you can't save everyone."

"That's the issue," I reply and turn to her, tucking her into my chest. "5000 were killed by Death Hunters in a mirror realm," I tell her. "And I couldn't save them."

I feel Nora flinch. Her people.

And there are no words she can say as I hold her tighter.

We get up about thirty minutes later, dressing and then stepping into the cloudy world. Rain falls lightly, the sky stained gray as if in mourning for the 5000 lost.
