"Stay the night."

I left the living room

For a brief moment

To get a tub of ice cream

And two large spoons

For us to share.

"Why?"

Jessamine has calmed down

And her breathing slowed

And her mascara was running in streaks.

"Because I want you to.

I want to make sure

That you'll be okay for tonight.

You can stay every night

If that's what makes you happy."

I returned with the items

And placed them on the coffee table.

"Right out of the tub?"

She giggled

Making my heart pick up speed

Even though hers was slowing down.

"Is there any other way?"

We ate in silence

And listened to the sounds of the other

Cramming spoonfuls of vanilla

Into our mouths.

"So tell me

What was the fight about?"

Jessa rubbed her temples

And took another scoop of ice cream.

"He thought I was cheating

Because I spend so much

Time with you."

"So he thought

You were cheating on him

With me?"

She nodded

A few more silent tears

Escaping her large green eyes.

"But I told him I would never.

You're my best friend

I would never."

Never.

I hoped she didn't notice

The slump in my shoulders

Or the life escape my eyes

When she wouldn't even give

Us a chance.

"Yeah.

Never."
