There was no one guarding the hideout on the outside I noticed as we approached it, it was exactly as Justin had said an abandoned horse barn almost far away from civilization. Alex motioned for us to start, handing me the keys to Justin’s car before walking off with the guys in tow.

The plan solely relied on us girls getting to Devonne before Ryan knew what was up and getting out as soon as possible then the boys would sort themselves out. As quietly as we could we approached the building from behind letting ourselves in from the backdoor. We walked for a couple of minutes until we came to a clearing but quickly ran back to take cover before we were discovered.

It was a standoff between Ryan, his goons and Alex alongside Justin and Sean that’s when I spotted Devonne her back was to us, she was staked to the ground using one of those spikes for tethering horses keeping her in one position I noticed the rope holding her to the stake was short and didn’t give enough room for movement. We were crouched behind a wall so couldn’t perfectly hear what was being said just bits and pieces.

“You tried to run away! Do you know how much trouble I could’ve been in if whoever snitched hadn’t?” Alex voice floated to us “did it ever occur to you that I didn’t, if I did would I have paid for your bail or stand as a guarantor?”

“You wouldn’t have had to bail me just to ease your guilt if you hadn’t snitched in the first place!”

I tuned the rest of their conversation out I needed to let Alex know we were in place so he could give the signal when ready I looked to Alicia and Siobhan clearly helpless and they just nodded sharing a look before disappearing for a bit.

When they got back they motioned for me to look towards Alex, I dunno what they did but whatever it was it got Alex’s attention without alerting Ryan as he was currently staring right at me with his head cocked in a position that read:

Yes I know your positions. Stay put.

Got it.

But Ryan didn’t seem to like the fact that Alex had his head cocked and slammed his fist into his gut effectively knocking him to one knee then towered over him, then I saw it, the signal he glanced briefly at me then looked away

Now.

The fact that he’d gotten Ryan to move further away from Devonne gave us the ultimate chance to execute our rescue plan. With care and stealthy movements we approached Devonne who was clearly shocked we’d come or were even present. Then she started to say something through the gag on her mouth but I placed a finger on my lips, shaking my head all the while glaring.

Shut up.

She seemed to get the message and I removed her gag then began untying the knots on the rope

“Oh Denise you shouldn’t have come get me. He’s still here, waiting for you he said you’d come” Devonne whispered. The guys where successfully diverting Ryan and his goons attention so I set about undoing her restraints.

“What’d you mean? The guys are currently taking care of Ryan no one’s coming to get me or lurking in the shadows” I whispered back nodding towards Alicia and Siobhan who were currently keeping guard with the planks they’d picked up for use as offense since they couldn’t engage in a fight. Suddenly she was free of her restraints so we started walking back the way we’d come as quiet as a mouse.

“It wasn’t that psychotic dude over there that kidnapped me. It was this green eyed dude with blonde hair”
“What? Ryan didn’t kidnap you?”

What’s going on here? Did she develop Stockholm syndrome already?

Alicia took point guard leading us the way we’d come then followed by Siobhan I took the rear with Devonne ahead of me.

“He walked up to me then started being all sweet and charming until he found out I wasn’t you then he’d gone apeshit, before I knew it he’d drugged me” she explained we were almost outside, I could see the woods we’d come through on our way here, I saw Alicia and Siobhan step out through the door we came in through. We’d propped it with a four by four to keep it from closing and making noise because the door squeaked a lot.

I was about to say something when there was a sudden blast that separated me from the girls effectively knocking me to the floor and shook the whole building. I tried getting up but the explosion had made my legs turn to jelly although I was still feeling disoriented I could hear Siobhan’s voice calling out to me but I couldn’t make my vocal cords produce the right sound, the ceiling had collapsed effectively barring my exit, that’s when I heard it boots crunching the debris and heading in my direction. I tried to make my legs walk again but ended up having to drag myself.

Must be the green eyed guy Devonne had mentioned earlier
Then he was on me I couldn’t make out a face since he was wearing a hood I tried scrambling backwards as his eyes gleamed but he didn’t say a word. I started crawling away but he was suddenly on me I fought hard flailing trying to wound him, I couldn’t let him win but panic had already began to set in.

If only I could get my fucking legs to move, I could barely feel them.
But he was heavy and strong forcing me into the ground my shoulder screamed in pain from where I’d been hit with part of the ceiling that fell then he grabbed a handful of my hair, pressing my chest and abdomen into the ground. Reaching over around my head with his free hand he stuffed a gasoline soaked rag over my nose and mouth, I tried biting his hand but failed the taste of gasoline was filling my mouth.

Gasoline? In this conflagration?

“Fight me and you’ll fry” he said and I didn’t doubt him for a second, I tried to scream, to run away but it was pointless the fume of the gasoline was filling my nose, mouth and throat.

“That’s right Denise try anything smart and I’ll light a match and watch the flames make their way into your lungs” I froze fighting the urge to pass out.

Just a few more minutes

The police are on their way.

Hang on.

Don’t let this bastard win!

But it was too late I couldn’t draw a breath without being overwhelmed by the fumes my head was swimming as blackness pulled at the edges of my consciousness and despite my best effort I lost to the blackness. The last thing I saw was a pair of dazzling green eyes that looked all too familiar and my last thought was where?
