A/N: Enjoy! :) <3
Diana walked out the kitchen, sparkling grape juice in hand. "Is this how we party in the USA?"
Steve shook his head, slowly shutting down his laptop. "Unless we're ten years old, no. Ever heard of champagne? It's stronger, but taste ten times better. Trust me."
She gaped at him. "Champagne? But Etta told me I'll never be the same if I drink champagne! She said I'll get brunk and then I'll never be the same! And she said it's bubbly and--"
"You'll get drunk, maybe. Although I've never heard of brunk. Besides, if you take one little sip and you'll be fine." He shrugged, brushing past her. "If you're seriously worried, we'll drink the grape stuff."
Diana followed him back towards the small cabinet with a frown. "Do you want me to die! This bottle is huge!" She pointed at the champagne he held.
"Is this too strong for you? C'mon, you know how these things work. We're sipping a glass, not this whole thing. Unless you want to." He teased, pouring a bit in a glass.
"I don't trust it. Just look at the way it bubbles, it's probably poisoned!" The Amazon pouted as she crossed her arms. "And nothing is too strong for me," She spat.
"Aw, the superhero is scared." Steve set down the couples drinks, slowly wrapping her into a hug. "You'll be okay, I swear. I wouldn't give you anything that could hurt you, okay?" He lifted her chin in his hand. "Besides, you are way too strong to get hurt by that much champagne," Steve cocked his head to the side, obviously referencing the abandoned drink.
"You're sure?" Diana muttered, suddenly feeling ten times better. She felt herself fall into his arms, a blush creeping along her cheeks. "Because I really think grape juice would be alright."
He rocked the two back and forth, his hand running through her hair. "Just try it, for me? You killed Ares, the god of war himself, what's a little fizz gonna do? You can't live life without being afraid of something, and you can't have a rainbow without a storm. You only have to take one sip."
"But..." Diana closed her eyes. She gently pushed away from him. "Fine. If I get sick, I'm blaming you and only you. Is this illegal? How did you even get it?"
"I went to Plum Market?" He replied, almost as if it were a question. "We're not taking drugs here, just getting a little bubbly. Relax, Diana, relax."
She threw her hands up, a smile growing wide on her face. "You mean this isn't some sort of liquid drug! Steve, you should've told me that before!" Without a shadow of a doubt, she downed the cup.
"Nope," Diana shook her head, spitting the drink in the sink. "That is pretty bad."
"We don't drink it until 2018!" He chuckled, fixing her a glass of water. "It may be horrible, but I swear, I didn't lace it with anything. This seriously explains why it had only cost ten cents," Without even trying the tiniest bit, he disposed of his.
She giggled, gladly sipping from the water. "You didn't even give it a shot! But to be fair, I don't blame you. After my reaction I wouldn't want to lay eyes on this drink anymore."
Diana couldn't quite get the bitter taste off her tongue, but she didn't mind. That hadn't been too bad compared to all the other things her boyfriend had made her do.
"If we waste our time being doctor here, we'll miss the midnight kiss!" He pulled her away from the sink. "Finish your water soon, the little kiss is going to be the most exciting thing of the year! Obviously a good way to start off 2018!"
She threw the plastic cup in the trash, happily grabbing the glasses from her coat pocket. "I found these when you were busy looking for all that party food last week."
Diana passed a pair of the '2018' glasses to Steve. "And it looks pretty cute. Like how the '1' has a little 'O' in it. He looks kinda shocked. I dunno, I just thought it was cool. And adorable."
"Oh Diana! You don't have to explain why you got these!" Maybe they were too enthusiastic over cheaply made sunglasses, but Steve had never tried them on and he was pumped.
"I just hope it won't get in the way of our kiss," She shrugged. Sure, a whole new year was something big--It was bigger than big, it was huge, and perhaps it did deserve a holiday, but she would have never imagined there would be this much merchandise. The walls of Walmart were lined to the brim with all different types of things. And what would you even do with all that junk once the year ended?
"Don't you worry your pretty little mind," He checked his watch for what seemed like the thousandth time that past hour. "The last time I stayed up this late I was...I don't even have a clue what I was doing. It must've been something good though. Be ready for a sleepless night."
"Sleepless? We just have to make it til midnight," The hero yawned with a stretch. "And it's 11:55. Right after that clock hits 12:01, I'm jumping in bed."
"Etta's throwing that huge party we have to go to, and fireworks will be exploding in the air all night. If you think anyone goes to sleep once it hits the new year, you're sadly mistaken. Again, unless you're ten, you're not getting a wink of sleep until 10 a.m."
"Gosh...I really don't know anything about this. I just thought we were ditching Etta's party."
"The whole fun part of the party doesn't start until after the new year begins. I've gone to enough of her gatherings to know that. Once it hits midnight, the night has just begun. But I mean, come on, we're talking Etta here. Her parties are never too cool. I would ditch it, but the last time she spent the holidays alone? I don't even want to remember what happened that night. She had--"
Fireworks went off, Steve's clock making the loudest ringing sound ever. It was like someone had just banged on a billion drums at once, and the lead singer of a band just hit the highest note ever. He dashed to the living room, tightly gripping Diana's hand.
"They're starting the ten second countdown!" Steve explained through the chaos.
"Oh!" She shouted, for some reason. Shouting just felt like the right thing at the moment. Diana didn't bother to chant along with the tv, her heart was beating too fast and she was still gasping for breath. Diana thought she was fast, but that mad run to this dimly lit room was crazy. Even Sonic the Hedgehog couldn't compete with Steve's skills on the holidays.
He had always been fast, but if there was something special going on, Steve busted out this hidden power from within. He could probably finish a mile in 0.2 seconds if he tried.
The ringing only got louder, and now it was alongside the chants. Five seconds. They were counting from five seconds now. Steve told her that once the ball dropped, she should cover her ears. Not literally, but he just wanted to warn her.
Steve bent his head down with a laugh. "I cannot miss this kiss. But boy did we go through a lot to get it.We waited 365 days!" Before she had the chance to respond, he was kissing her.
Diana kissed back forcefully and a little roughly. Usually she would take her time and cherish the moment, but not today. Today everything had gone by in a blur, and the kiss seemed better if it fit the mood: Messy and quick.
Just like everything else, the kiss only lasted five seconds. It was probably their fastest and their worst, but she still felt amazing. Even though minutes before Diana had been tired, she felt more alive than ever at that moment.
"Happy 2018," Steve and Diana whispered at the same time, hand in hand. They looked out the window at the exploding colors with a smile. It really did look like it was going to be a good year.
