"Where did you grow up?" Knox asked. Where they were sitting protected them from the strongest wind, but there was still a steady breeze of warm air moving past them. Sky's hair was pulled back in a ponytail and it flew up in the air like flames, the wind trying to carry it away. Every so often, she would try to pin down hair that had pulled lose and keep it out of her face.
The moon's reflection stretched out long, running towards the ship on the dark water. The wall they were leaning against was cool and it was slightly humming.
"San Diego," Sky said with a slightly British accent. Her gaze was on the water.
"I grew up in Philadelphia," he said. He was answering his own question, as she had directed.
"Have you had a Philly Cheese Steak?" she asked. The question caught Knox off guard. He had expected a personal question.
"You can't judge my questions," she said when she caught the look on his face.
He laughed and had to think about it for a moment. "You wanna know something crazy, I actually don't think I have had a Philly Cheese Steak."
"Seriously?" She sat up from her slight slump against the wall and turned to face him.
"No," he said, feeling as if this was the wrong answer.
"Well, I suggest the next time you visit home you have one. They are delicious," she said. She returned to her slump.
"Sir, yes sir," he said, saluting her.
"At ease," she said.
They returned to silence, looking out over the water as Knox thought of his next question. "Do you have siblings?" he asked.
"Two." She paused for a moment, like she wasn't going to say more. "An older brother, Tucker, and an older sister, Emerson."
"What are they like?"
"Excuse me mister, you have to answer the question first. Then I believe it was my turn," she said.
"Okay, okay. I have an older brother, Grant," he said.
"I like that name," she said. "What are you afraid of?" She looked at him and he met her eyes for a moment, before looking at the water.
He thought for a moment. "Being forgotten," he finally said. He waited a moment as she took in his answer, before giving her a small nudge.
"What am I afraid of?" she asked herself. "Feet."
"Really?" he asked. He looked down at his feet in flip flops, closely placed near her feet.
"Yeah. They are stinky and sweaty and look like aliens."
"So, if I did this?" He kicked off his flip flops and moved his feet towards her leg.
"Knox!" she half screamed, half scolded. "I'll leave you up here and you'll have to find your own way back." She angled her body away from him.
He laughed and returned his foot to his shoe. "But seriously, what are you afraid of," he asked.
"I just told you," she said. He gave her a look that said he wasn't satisfied. She turned back to the water. "Being limited," she finally answered. She gave him a face that asked if he was happy with that answer.
"What are your siblings like?" he asked, moving on.
"Well, Tucker is at the University of Chicago right now. They hired him on to do research. He does something in science. He's explained it to me before but I always forget. Emerson is a storm chaser." Her voice carried a hint of pride. "She lives in the Midwest and studies tornadoes."
