"Alright sweetheart, take a seat here" Demi says, gesturing to the chair opposite hers as she sits down.
Camila nods and tentatively sits down wheres she told, anxiously playing with her lamb stuffie that was tightly gripped in her shaky hands.
(Mama had pulled the pacifier part off of it before they left this morning, saying she wasn't allowed to bing the that with her as people would 'ask questions', but she didn't mind, the lamb part was just fine)
She was feeling nervous, super super nervous, but even she knew that doing this was was tons better than having to face any of the people that hurt her. She'd do this a million times if it meant never having to see them again.
Taking a deep breath, she looks up and brings all of her attention to Demi.
She could do this.
She watches the woman turn on the small voice recorder sat on the table in front of her, as well as the camera that was sat on a tripod next to her. She was unsure on why both were needed, but she wasn't going to question it.
"Okay, can you state your full name and age for me?" Demi asks as she grabs her notebook and pen from the table.
"Karla Camila Jauregui, nine years old" The small girl says clearly, and surprisingly, confidently.
"Great. Now, I just need to ask you a few questions about your time at the orphanage. At what age were you brought there?"
"I was seven" Camila mumbles, not so confidently this time. She could already feel herself getting upset, and she hates that.
Why couldn't she do something any normal person could do without crying?
Swallowing the tightness in her throat and ignoring her teary eyes, Camila brings her attention back to Demi as she asks the next question, ignoring the feeling of wanting to desperately be in her mama's arms.
Lauren's legs bounce anxiously as she waits for her baby. She didn't know why, but she's got a feeling that something was going to go wrong, something like Camila refusing to answer the questions, or maying lying out of fear. She knew there was a very small chance of that actually happening as Camila and herself had a long talk about the interview this morning, but the fear was still there.
They'd spoken about what questions she may be asked, as she wanted Camila to be prepared, but she didn't think the answers she gave the small girl were entirely accurate as she didn't know much about this type of work.
After about an hour of anxiously waiting, the door was slowly opened and out walks Demi, Camila sat on her hip. Her eyes were red and swollen, her cheeks still wet with tears, and her once neatly done hair was all over the place.
Quickly standing up, Lauren rushes over to the two and happily takes her baby into her arms, holding her closely as Camila returns her right grip. She lightly sways the girl in her arms to try and sooth her, but if the wetness on her neck was anything to go by, Lauren guessed her to be crying again.
Placing a kiss on the side of her head, Lauren brings her focus to Demi.
"Well..." she wonders quietly.
Demi smiles, "she did amazing, you should be super proud of her" she says gently. "You're required to be there the day of court, not for long, but just enough to let the judge know about Camila's living situation with you" She adds, her voice a lot quieter than the last time she spoke.
Lauren nods, "that's fine, I'm gonna get her home now" she says.
After quickly saying goodbye to Demi, she leaves the police station with her baby in her arms. She wanted to ask her how it went, what questions were asked, ect, but she knew now wasn't time.
As she gets to her car, she quickly unlocks it and goes to set the small girl in to her car seat, but stops when she cries out. Not wanting to deal with her getting upset, she decides to make a compromise, as she knew she couldn't exactly let her go without her seat.
As much as the small girl would probably like that.
"What if Mama puts your seat next to mine?" She asks, pointing to the passenger seat as she shifts the small girl onto her hip.
"Please mama" the small girl whimpers, tightly griping onto her shirt. Lauren, happy that the small girl had agreed, gently sets her baby down onto the floor before reaching in to uninstall the car seat from the back.
Lifting it out, Lauren takes Camila's hand and leads her round to the passenger side gently releasing it again as she quickly and easily installs it in the front next to hers.
Once she went over it to make sure it was in properly, Lauren takes Camila under her arms and lifts her into her seat.
Seeing and feeling Camila's tense body language, she leans in and places a gentle kiss on her head, "Is there anything you'd like to do?" She asks as she helps slide her arms into the straps, clipping the two small plastic pieces together that were sat on her chest.
"I can pick?" Camila asks, sniffling slightly.
"Sure bubs, whatever you want" Lauren replies as she grabs the piece from in between Camila's legs, clipping the two metal pieces into it before running her fingers underneath the straps, wanting to make sure they weren't too tight.
"I don't know what to pick mama" Camila answers as she shifts slightly in the uncomfortable seat.
She will admit sitting next to her Mama was a lot better than sitting in the back on her own, but she still wishes she was big enough to go without a stupid car seat, but then again, if she was that big, mama wouldn't be able to carry her...okay she takes it back, she doesn't want to be any bigger.
"Mhhh okay, mama can fix that, why don't we go to build a bear?" Lauren suggests, pressing a kiss onto Camila's head.
Camila frowns, "what's build a bear?" She questions quietly.
"It's in the name baby, you get to build a bear. I'm pretty sure there are another animals you can pick from too" Lauren explains, her heart melting at her baby's adorableness.
Camila grins happily, surprising Lauren, "can we go now?" She asks quietly, but excitedly.
She'd never got to make her own stuffed animal before!
Lauren grins back, "of course" closing the passenger door, Lauren walks round to the drivers side, getting in herself before buckling up and starting the car.
"This is only a one time thing okay love? Next time we go out, you'll be going back into the back" Lauren says softly as she pulls out of the parking lot and into the road.
"Yes Mama" Camila replies with a grin, knowing her mama would probably forget about the whole thing.
She was pretty forgetful.
Lauren knew this whole interview thing may set Camila back a little, as having to talk about her time at the orphanage couldn't have been easy for her. For one, she was expecting her to be lot more clingy and and emotional, wanting to be constantly held or near her.
And her sleeping habits. Last night, Lauren had managed to put her in her own bed to sleep, albeit, there were a few tears, but overall, she agreed with it pretty easily. But tonight, Lauren's hundred percent sure that sleeping in her own bed won't be happening, no matter how hard she tries.
