Chapter 9

Zara closed her laptop in frustration and kicked off her shoes. She couldn't concentrate on her writing when some things were weighing heavy on her conscious. She went to her kitchen and pulled out her favorite bottle of Hennessey. She hadn't taken a swig ever since her one-night stand with that busty white girl. She turned to her brown buddy for comfort when she couldn't find it anywhere else. It helps ease her tensions. She put the bottle to her lips and threw her head back, letting the liquid burn a trail through her mouth and down her throat.

She poured some into a glass and walked back to her bedroom. She placed the glass on her nightstand and flopped onto the bed kicking one of her legs up. She felt around for her phone. Once, she found it she scrolled through looking for any sign of her Melanie. She sighed when she seen some missed calls from her father and some unread texts telling her to call him ASAP.

Zara rolled her eyes and let her arm drop. She started to feel a little fuzzy so she knew the liquor was kicking in. She played some instrumentals as her eyes wandered to the ceiling where they danced aimlessly. She downed the rest of her drink and let herself dose off.

Melanie reached her house in the project four blocks west of where she was dropped off at. Their house was the best on the block. It was surrounded by dilapidated houses, dirt roads and broken sidewalks. She walked through their trimmed grass and got into her house calling for her mother. After walking through their home she figured she wasn't home so she climbed into the shower.

Her house was nothing compared to Zara's house or her apartment. She refused to let Zara drive that far down the street because she would probably feel unsafe in the area. Her car would probably be vandalized or something too.  Even Melanie felt unsafe sometimes. If it weren't for her mother being well known in the community then she's sure their house would've been targeted already.

She stepped out of the shower into her room and changed into her work clothes. She worked at the cheesecake factory downtown, but since she had a little time on her hands she would be able to take the bus and get there in time.

She checked her phone and clicked her girlfriend's contact. She felt a little hurt that Zara neglected to tell her about that woman from the café. It was before her though so she couldn't be too mad. Maybe it hurt because it wasn't that long ago before her. She had high hopes for her relationship, but she was nervous that bigger problems stood in the way of their new love. Like Zara's father or other people like him.

Speaking of the devil. Melanie's doorbell rang followed with a knock. She hated when people did that, but she supposed they did just in case the doorbell hadn't done its job. She looked through the peep hole and was surprised to see Zara's father. He wore a black suit, black tie, and black tinted sun shades. She pulled the door open, "Hello Mr. Hendrix, I wasn't exp—

"May I come in?" He interjected with his eyebrows raised curiously and his hand gesturing to the inside of the house. "Sure," Melanie pulled the door open more to let him in. He fixed his top coat as she glided inside the house. He looked around the house making interesting sounds. He looked uninterested though.

"What're you doing here?"

"Oh right," he took off his shades and folded them at his side, "Look I'll be quick. I have somewhere to be and by the looks of it I'm sure you do too," he pointed to her work attire with his shades. He crossed his arms over his chest and stood straight.

"I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't see my daughter anymore."

What the hell?

He waited for a retort from Melanie but he was left with nothing. "I'm sure this may shock you a little bit, but it's not you. I've just been trying to work with my daughter for some time now to get her to stop this," he threw his hands up as if the word he was searching for was in the air, "this phase she's still going through. This is not the life my wife and I had set for our daughter. Do you understand?"

"She's 21 Mr—

"It doesn't matter. You wouldn't want me to waltz into your life, your home," he looked around the house, "and throw things out of its proper order. That would upset you now wouldn't it?"

Melanie nodded her head solemnly, "I love your daughter Mr. Hendrix," Tears started to burn the back of her eyes.

"I can understand why you think you feel that way. My daughter," he laughed, "she has my ways. But you will not be leaving this empty-handed, no," he reached for the inside of his coat and pulled out a stack of money and held it up and placed it into Melanie's hand.

"That's five grand. I'm sure you and your mother could use it."

Melanie shook her head and ferried her eyebrows. "How do you know about us? How'd you know where I lived?"

"I know people," he folded his hands in front of him and pursed his lips. Tears blurred her vision as she actually considered the decision. Five grand was enough to help pay for a better house and probably some other miscellaneous things. Was it enough to let Zara go?

"Oh, I'm sorry," Hendrix reached for his coat once more and pulled out another stack placing it into her hands, "You'd probably need more." Now what she had was enough to clear off loans, and buy a nice car.

Melanie gasped as a tear slowly rolled down her cheek. She was too overwhelmed to feel offended. It was what it was.

"I have somewhere to be, but it was a pleasure." He turned to leave placing his shades back on his face. "Be safe at work," He nodded at Melanie and shut the door behind him.

She stared at the ten thousand dollars that was in her hands. The two stacks were heavy and thick. She flipped through the money and choked back a sob.

She couldn't go to work like this...
