A Job

I stared down at a newspaper that arrived this morning. The Employees Needed title caught my eye.

"Any luck in finding a job? Would you like me to help?" Mother stood next to the coffee maker as it was filling.

I sighed. "I think I manage. Maybe a walk around the shopping district. I might find a job." I stood up with the newspaper tucked under my arm.

Mother waved as I walked out the door towards the shopping district. It was a long-ish walk.

While I walked, I opened the newspaper and looked at the first job listed. A teacher's assistant.... sounds doable.

I tucked the newspaper back under my arm and ran towards the school listed, which wasn't too far. I was assigned to a teacher name Mr. Hawkly. He ordered me to pass out work, attendance, and watch the kids play outside.

It was pretty easy until I did the wrong thing to a child acting inappropriately. Honestly, I don't know how to be mean to children even if they are complete butt heads. Instead of yelling at him or something, I reached into one of my pockets and handed him a lollipop to keep him quiet.

I still don't get why I got fired for giving a kid a treat so he could behave

I walked out of the school and opened the newspaper again. Next job listed is... a cash register at a bakery. All I had to say is, "hello, how are you? What delicious treat would you like today?" For each customer, I decided to change my voice. But then I dropped one of the specials on the ground. It was supposed to be given to the customer two hours before I dropped it.

The last job offer was working at an ice cream place. I have to scoop ice cream, serve it, and clean the tables. Gladly, I've succeeded in this job. My boss, at the end of my interrogation from him, gave me the time I should come and leave, and when my shifts are.

After getting out, I headed home. I used my own key and unlocked the door. I then yawned as I fell on the couch.

"Any luck?" Mother held dishes that she was taking to the kitchen.

I waited for her to walk back into the living room so she could hear me. "Yup, after attempting two other jobs, which I failed miserably on, I found a job i the shopping district." I groaned as I turned onto my back and stared at the ceiling.

"Oh, where do you work?" Mother smiled as she sat next to me on the couch.

I closed my eyes. "At the ice cream place not too far from here."

Mother stood up. "That's fantastic, my dear. Even better since it's summer." She smoothed down my hair before walking to the staircase. "Get some rest."

"Yeah..." Before I completely dozed off, I heard Mother laugh and walk down the hall to her room.
