Invitation
I went to work the next day all drowsy. Sleeping was really something to get used to... again. After using my powers to read the memories and emotions of Damien, I got exhausted. I know reading someone's memories is a violation of privacy but the only way to do my job is to do so.
I gave ice cream, as usual. There were times when there were no customers. During that time, I would read my book or clean the tables.
My boss walked in the third time for his third bowl of ice cream. I'm getting the feeling something is wrong.
"Are you okay, sir?" I asked as I wiped down some of the tables. "You seem to be eating a lot of ice cream. Are you stressed?" I took out the nearly empty ice cream buckets to refill them.
"My wife left me yesterday saying that I was hanging with another woman." He ate a spoonful of ice cream and stared down at the bowl, frowning.
I stopped what I was doing and looked at him. "Were you with that other woman like she said?"
"The thing is, it wasn't even a woman." He patted his ice cream with his spoon. "It was my uncle."
I cringed. Did he look like a woman? I cleared my throat. "Did you tell her that it was a misunderstanding?"
"She wouldn't listen to me," he croaked. His eyes welled up with tears but it seemed as if he was holding them in.
I smiled to myself slightly as I sat on the chair across from him. "Can you call her up?"
"Yes, but she won't listen. I don't even know why I'm telling you this," he whimpered.
"Let me talk to her. I won't allow you to dwell in sadness."
"Are you sure? I mean, I can't have you do this for me." His face brightened.
I smiled. "I don't mind, really."
He nodded and took out his phone. He then handed his phone to me. I looked at the screen to see it connecting. I placed the phone over my ear to hear a woman's angry voice.
"What do you want, Max! I told you that we are-"
"Excuse me, ma'am." I interrupted. "Hi, I'm Ariel, I am not associated with Max at all. I just called on his phone to tell you that it was all a misunderstanding."
"A misunderstanding?! Another woman has my husband's phone!" She yelled.
I grinned. "Your choice of words has given yourself away. I'm surprised you didn't say, ex-husband." I winked at my boss. "Ma'am, please... give Max another chance or at least allow him to explain."
"W-what! What is there to explain?!" She yelled at me once more yet with a hint of confusion in her voice.
"Madam, your husband needs you as much as you need him. You running away, I can tell, has made a hole in your heart. It is forever getting bigger because you feel that he has replaced you with another. Don't feel that way. The pain you feel will go away if you just give Max just one moment to explain. To explain how he feels about you." There was silence on the other side. "WIll you give him a chance?"
"W-who are you?" She stuttered, defeated.
"I am but only someone who works at an ice cream shop. Don't worry, I don't love Max like you do."
"I-I'll give him a chance." Her voice quivered. "Thank you." She whispered before hanging up.
I handed my boss his phone and stood up. "There you have it. She will give you a chance."
