The Truth To One
I was on break the next day. Calvin and I decided to hang at the river. We sat at the edge with our feet in the water. I closed my eyes. I could feel the water hit my skin. The sound of the faint whistling of the wind as it passes through the dancing tree trunks. And the small warmth I feel deep in my heart.
I opened my eyes to find Calvin staring at me with a flustered look on his face.
"Say, what was that thing you wanted to tell me?" I asked.
Calvin thought for a moment. "Isn't it obvious?" He laughed.
"Huh?" I looked at him confused.
"Carlos obviously likes you!" He smirked.
My heart skipped a beat and I turned away so Calvin couldn't see my face flush.
"Don't tell me! You like him too?!" Calvin laughed. "That's perfect!"
"H-How do you know about this kind of stuff?! I-I mean you're too young-"
"Anyone with a mom and dad knows about this stuff." He shrugged. "What about you? Aren't you going to tell me why I can't tell them your real name?"
I sighed. "You have to promise, PROMISE you won't tell a soul, Calvin."
Calvin stared at me for a moment. "Woah, is it that serious? Okay, you can count on me!" He nodded.
I exhaled and told him who I was, where I came from, what I came here to do, and that I died and became a goddess. I didn't want to tell him how much time I had left.
"There is a price, right? There has to be some kind of price you have to pay. Do you have a limited time or... did someone have to die to replace you... or... um-"
I'm surprised he believes me. I expected him to laugh in disbelief. I'm also surprised he figured that I have a price. "Limited time."
He paused. "H-how much time?" Calvin looked into my eyes.
"U-um... one or two... weeks," I whispered.
Calvin's eyes widened and started to well up with tears. "O-one or t-two weeks?" He stuttered. Calvin then started to sob.
I frowned and moved closer to him. I wrapped my arms around him and squeezed him tight. "Don't cry." I held a smile that hid the fact that I'm holding in tears.
I caressed his back as I hummed a tune my sister used to sing when I was feeling down. It seemed to calm him down a little.
Once we parted, Calvin began to wipe his tears. "D-do you have to leave?"
I grabbed one of his hands. "No one can take my place. If I stay, people who have little hope will begin to lose all." I smiled.
He hugged me tightly. "You'll be watching me... from up above?"
I pat his head. "Of course. I can visit you know. Very little of course, but I will send you signs that show I'm there with you."
We sat in silence until we got up to head back home. We went through the door and walked into the house which all the lights were shut off. We both went straight towards my room.
"Can I stay with you again?" Calvin asked nervously.
I smiled and patted my bed. "Anytime."
Calvin smiled and jumped into my bed. He got himself comfortable. He sighed in content until my phone began to ring. I walked towards my phone that I placed next to my lamp beside my bed and answered the call.
"Hello?" I waited for a response.
"Hi, this is the hospital. Sorry to call so late but I came to tell you that the patient named Marilyn Cain will be released in a few moments. She hopes that you can pick her up along with her son Calvin. Is this okay with you?"
I glanced at Calvin and smiled. "Of course. I'll be there soon. Thank you."
"Alright, no problem. Bye."
"Bye." I hung up.
"Who was that?" Calvin sat up.
I grabbed my sweater and put it on. "Come on, get up. We are going to get your mom from the hospital."
"R-really!? I- what about you... you'll be leaving soon and I-"
"Calvin." I walked up to him and placed one of my hands on his head. "Don't worry, you both will be staying with my mom and me until you both find a sufficient place to live." I smiled. "Okay?"
Calvin grinned and nodded.
"Now, come on. She is waiting."
We walked all the way to the hospital silently. He was still sad despite what I said. I know he can cheer that sadness away himself, though.
We arrived to see Calvin's mother outside waiting. As soon as she spotted us, she stretched out her arms preparing to embrace Calvin. Calvin hesitated. He glanced at me before running towards Marilyn. Calvin smiled wide and shared an embrace with Marilyn.
I walked up to them.
"Thank you so much for taking care of my Calvin." Marilyn smiled. "Much is appreciated."
"It's no problem, really. I'll gladly have the both of you stay at my mother's place until you find a home of your own."
She thought for a moment. "I wouldn't want to be a burden."
"No worries. Please, don't think of yourself as a burden. My mom loves having guests over." I smiled.
She nodded.
We then walked all the way back home. Calvin and Marilyn, gladly, talked the whole way. When we arrived, I let her in and guided her to my late sister's room. I didn't feel exactly comfortable in having Marilyn stay in there, but it's an open room.
Sadly, even though his mother is back, Calvin wanted to sleep with me.
When we both got into bed, I turned to him. "Calvin, I think your mom would love your company. It has been a long while since she has gotten to see you. She probably wants to have her son in her arms right now."
"She is.... uncomfortable to sleep with!" He lied.
"Calvin, tell me the truth." I grabbed one of his hands and squeezed it tightly.
He sighed. "I rather be with the one I won't be able to see for the rest of my life than someone who will be with me forever!" He began to shed tears.
I put my hand on one of his cheeks. "She would think you moved on from her in her absence. She will become sad with that thought. Calvin, when depression goes too far, I can't fix it." I sighed as he wiped his tears.
"At least stay with her for one night." I pleaded.
"Tomorrow!" Calvin ignored my plea and hugged me tightly.
I frowned but hugged him back. Soon after that, he fell asleep in my arms.
"Aurora....don't....leave.... m-me," Calvin mumbled as he turned in his sleep.
I opened my eyes and looked at him.
"No... please." He flinched.
I rubbed his forehead and kissed his cheek. That's how my mom would do it when I had a nightmare. He stopped turning and slept soundly. I smiled to myself and closed my eyes. I thought of nothing.
