Carlos

The beach was crowded with people who looked to be having a great time. There was a bonfire, limbo, barbecue, a bar, picnics, theater, and there were fireworks set up. I walked in with only sweatpants and a sweater as everyone else wore party dresses and t-shirts with jeans. I smiled slightly as I looked for the others.

Michael was hanging around a group of girls next to the bar. Damien and Courtney sat on a mat in front of the theater which played the movie Splash. Finally, Carlos was sitting on a log away from everyone in the dark while staring at the waves as they crash into the rocks that lay on the sand.

I exhaled and closed my eyes to feel the energy around me. The air carried positive energy. Although, the direction in where Carlos sat held negativity in the air. I walked to Carlos hoping to change his mood. He looked at me for a second but then back at the waves.

"You seem to be feeling down." I smiled. "May I sit?"

He nodded and scooted aside.

"What's wrong?" I looked at him. "You don't have to tell me."

He glanced at from the edge of his eyes. "Nothing."

My eyes widened at the sound of his voice. His voice was soft yet somber.

"I can tell it's something." I looked into his eyes once he glanced at me again.

Gladly, I didn't see that one memory. Instead, he thought of completely nothing. His mind was completely blank. But his emotions were everywhere. Depression, sorrow, self-blame, grief, and some embarrassment because of me being with him. The pain in my head came back for a split second.

His eyes widened as I smiled at him.

"You have a quite despondent life." I closed my eyes to recall the dark memory. "I know what it's like to lose someone you care deeply for. Your family."

"How did-" He started, startled.

"I know what it's like to lose what seems like your whole world." I glanced at him with a sad expression. "I lost my father, my two brothers, my sister, and myself." I interrupted. "They were all murdered like your father."

Carlos was at loss for words.

I got up. "Think of how life would be if you smiled. Living life in pain and sorrow will get you nowhere. It just isn't the right way to go. Life is short, live life to the fullest! Isn't that what your father would say?" I looked at him and smiled.

Carlos stared into my eyes as if he was trying to find how I know all this.

"Think about it.  See you later, Carlos." At the sound of his name, Carlos grabbed my hand before I could walk away.

"Can you.... uh.... stay?" Even in the darkness, I could see Carlos' cheeks brighten in color.

I smiled and nodded. He stood up and we started to walk along the water as it came up and then back down. I could feel a warm sensation slowly starting to develop in my hand. I didn't notice that our fingers intertwined. I'm not human, yet I can feel the warmth of his skin against mine.

We both spotted a rock that the tips of the waves could reach. We climbed on top, hands still attached, and sat. The wind blew as each wave curled from a distance. I could tell that Carlos shivered. I let go of his hand and took off my sweater. I then handed it to him.

"I can't take this! You'll be cold!" His cheeks became bright red either from the cold or embarrassment.

"Don't worry, I can't really feel the cold." I smiled. It is the truth.

He hesitantly took the jacket and put it on. He stopped shivering.

"T-thank you."

We clutched hands and scooted closer to each other. I glanced at him to see that he slightly smiled. I looked into his eyes as he did to me. Our faces slowly came closer. I could tell by his eyes that he felt happy for the first time after his father's death.

Our faces grew closer until finally, our lips touched. He wrapped his arms around me as the kiss deepened. We shared a long passionate kiss until we both slowly parted.

"Ariel?" He squeezed me tighter.

"What is it?" I gazed into his eyes as I wrapped my arms around his neck.

"I feel as if my heart might explode." He smiled.

I pulled him closer our noses touching. "Mine too." We kissed again as the fireworks were set off.
