Truth to Another

I opened my eyes the next morning to the sound of my phone buzzing. I slowly reached over Calvin and grabbed my phone.

"A text from an unknown number?" I whispered to myself and turned on my phone.

(###)-###-###: Ariel?

Me: Who is this?

(###)-###-###: It's Carlos😊

I sat up in my bed. "Carlos?" I stared at his text.

Me: How did you get my number?

(###)-###-###: Michael gave it to me

(###)-###-###: He said that he has his ways

Me: Not creepy at all

(###)-###-###: 😆

(###)-###-###: I agree

Me: Do you need something? 🙂

(###)-###-###: Meet me at the river

Me: What for?

(###)-###-###: It's a surprise 😏

Me: Alright

Me: Meet you there

I turned off my phone and put it next to the lamp. I then got up, changed in my closet, and put my phone into my back jean pocket.

I walked to Calvin and shook him slightly. "Calvin."

He groaned.

I laughed quietly. "Calvin, I'll be back."

"Okay," he mumbled.

Honestly, I think he'll forget.

I walked out of the room and told mother I was leaving. I also told her to make Marilyn a proper breakfast that wasn't burnt.

"Don't burn the house down, again." I glared at her. It happened before. We even had to rebuild the house.

I walked to the park and slowly walked into the forest. I could feel slight negativity in the air. It wasn't strong though. Maybe the feeling of doubt or regret.

I walked to the river to see a plain blanket spread out across the ground with a small basket holding it down. I walked up to it slowly with a surprised look on my face.

"Do you like it?" Carlos turned to face me. I could tell the doubt was coming from him. "I didn't want to go so far as in putting rose petals, wine glasses, and candles like in one of those movies. I assumed you aren't into that kind of stuff." He scratched the back of his head with his face all flushed. I found that cute.

I laughed. He seemed shocked in my reaction. "You didn't have to worry about such things." I walked up to him. "Why do you have all this set up?" I acted clueless.

I knew where this was going. He set this up as a date. I kept my frown from showing. As much as I would love to enjoy this... I can't... not with the fact that I don't have much time left.

"I wanted to spend time with you, that's all." He smiled and sat on the blanket. "Will you join me?" He held out his hand.

I hesitated but then grabbed his hand. "I'd love to.

"I picked some fruits from the garden my mother grew." He opened the basket and pulled out a small bowl filled with strawberries and grapes.

I held my tears. "T-that's so kind of you and your mother."
