Mission
I went to the beach early in the morning because I have no work this early. Once I arrived, the memory of my younger self at this same beach building sandcastles and collecting shells. I smiled to myself slightly at the memory.
I took off my tennies and walked in the sand. I walked closer to the waves that crashed into the muddy sand and rocks. I sat down on the dry sand close to the muddy and wet one and stared out into the ocean. I frowned at the thought that I can't feel the sand or the salty breeze.
"You look beautiful as the wind passes through your hair! Almost like an angel!"
Two high school boys walked over to me. I blinked and looked at them. I then noticed their uniforms.
"Wow! Your eyes are like the sunset! What a beautiful orange and yellow color." The tall one stared deep into my eyes after speaking in a slightly uncomfortable tone.
Well if it isn't a flirt. I rolled my eyes. What a day. "Don't you have school?" I asked as I looked back into the crashing curls of waves.
"Aren't you supposed to be in school?" He smirked.
I grinned. "I actually finished high school a long time ago." Twenty or forty years ago to be exact.
He stood there trying to find the right comeback. "Well, uh, you don't look like it!"
Never judge by looks, is what I wanted to add but I don't want to argue all day. I looked at them from the edge of my eye to see the other boy, who was silent as I was, staring into the waves.
"I'm Micheal! And this here is my best friend Carlos!" Michael nudged Carlos.
"Say, want to go to school with us?" He threw his backpack over his shoulder.
I stood up and dusted myself off. I looked at them. "I don't go to school anymore." I looked at my watch which was wrapped around my wrist on my right hand. "Sorry, but I have to get to work. Have a good day." I grabbed my cross-body purse and walked away.
"Don't leave! I will find you, my damsel! The invisible armor in which I wear will shine for you!"
I rolled my eyes as I stifled a slight laugh.
I walked back to the ice cream place and worked until noon. I yawned after I gave another customer the rocky road flavored ice cream. It must be a popular flavor.
"Hey, I never caught your name." My boss came out from his office and ordered a Reeses flavored ice cream.
"Um, Ariel," I answered.
"That beautiful name of yours reminds me of the children's story of The Little Mermaid."
I nodded.
"Well, Ariel, why not take a day off? You deserve a break."
"Um, okay... thanks." I laughed nervously, picked up my purse, and walked out.
"Huzzah!" He cheered.
I smiled crookedly as I walked out. My boss is weird.
I then walked home, told Mother that I'm going to the beach again, grabbed my book, and walked to the beach. I sat in the same spot where Father and I would play volleyball and go surfing and even search for rare looking shells.
"So Micheal wasn't kidding when he saw the prettiest gal at the beach this morning." Damien smiled as he walked up to me with books in his hands.
I ignored him. I'm still trying to shake the memory of my late Father out of my head.
"Micheal didn't bother you, did he?" He grinned but his tone showed a hint of sadness.
I looked up at him and he jumped on surprise. He gazed into my eyes. I could see his past, his problems. He was adopted by his mother, Caroline, and his father, John. He has three sisters and two brothers. He had sixteen relationships before the one he has now. He doesn't love her though. He seems to be looking for someone to care for. Like a hole in his heart that can only be filled with a lover only for him.
I looked away and exhaled. I drained a lot of energy in just that one scan.
"You seem to be missing something in your heart." I closed my eyes to think of ways to make him happy.
"Huh?"
I looked at the dim sun that hovered over the water. "Courtney, was it? She isn't for you? You're still looking. Looking for someone to love... someone to love you." I smiled and glanced at him.
"How do you-"
"If you don't like her why stay with her? Someone like her isn't someone you deserve. What you really need is a bond stronger than death. A bond that can never be broken even after death. A bond with your family." I stood up and dusted off the sand.
He was silent.
"Try to talk to them. Try to create something that will fill your empty heart. Trust me, you would want to before theirs and your time is up." I looked at him. He looked at me with wide eyes filled with confusion.
"Good luck." I grabbed my purse and started to head off.
"Wait-"
"Oh, Damien, there you are! It's time to go shopping!" Courtney waved at Damien from inside a black limo.
Damien looked at Courtney and then back at me. I glanced at him, smiled, and walked away.
