Harry's P.O.V
Selene had been there. It was definitely her. Maybe her hair was shorter, but her beauty was undeniably unmistakable.
She looked broken, torn, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel the same way.
But when she left I couldn't hand the baby off to Jane. She had begged me to set aside our differences for the sake of our child.
I agreed, but I was never more than just friendly to her.
Fuck.
I let her go again.
After I dropped Jane and the baby off, I sped down to where Anne lived. She had come by the shop and gotten another tattoo earlier this month. I couldn't help but ask about Selene that day.
How was she? Was she doing what she wanted?
Did she miss me?
Of course, I didn't ask the last question, but I did wonder about it since she left.
Anne opened the door, and a strong sense of familiarity washed over me as she gave me Selene's address with a wide smile.
I could always count on that girl.
The place marked over four hours away, which meant I would get there until late. But if she didn't answer, I would have to wait until the next day and try again.
I had waited too long, but there was no way of knowing if she still felt the same about me. If I showed up and she was with someone else, how would I continue to go on with my life knowing that someone else made her happy?
I called Lance and told him I wouldn't be back until tomorrow, to which he agreed.
Thankfully, the shop was better than ever. We had new clients coming in from different parts of the state. Apparently, Larry's son spoke well about the shop to the different places he taught literature in.
But now wasn't the time to think about all that.
I started down the road on my way towards Selene.
**
The town looked lonely, and it was hard to think about Selene living here. Then again, she made the most of wherever she was. It was one of the many qualities I loved about her.
The word played in my head.
I parked a few houses down, not wanting to wake her up if she was asleep. The image of her sleeping figure next to me flashed through my mind and I couldn't help but smile.
As I walked closer to the place, I noticed the light on. Then I saw her.
She was drinking from a glass, her expression looked distant and somber. Her hair framed her face nicely, it made her look mature and sure of herself. But the look on her face said otherwise.
Did I do this to her?
I reached the front step, my finger reaching over to the doorbell. My hand stopped, and I spun around.
I've damaged her enough.
Frozen, I turned towards the door again. I couldn't be selfish and decide what was best for the both of us again. Not this time.
The doorbell rang and I watched her soft expression drop. She stood there for what seemed like a long time, just as stunned and conflicted as I was.
"Harry," she spoke.
My mouth went dry, but I couldn't look weak in front of her. I had to make sure I meant every goddamn word because this was my last chance at spending the rest of my life with her, "I promised you I'd come back." I had to try my hardest not to fuck this up, but the words came easily for the woman in front of me, "But I also told you that no matter where you were, I would always come find you because, Selene-" I swallowed. "You mean the goddamn world to me."
She stared at me, a single tear sliding down her cheek before she opened the door wider, "What took you so long?"
I stepped towards her, wrapping my arms around her and kissing her hard. Her lips were still so soft.
I shut the door behind me, my hands wanting the warmth of her body.
She stopped and looked at me. Her hand raised the hem of my shirt where I tattooed myself the night I left her. She smiled at the ink before raising her own shirt up.
Promise.
