Chapter 14: The Budding Friendship

My family and I had come to some sort of unannounced agreement. Because while I loved being so close to my family, there were times when my 'fight or flight' became just a bit much and I felt the need to leave the manor.

So, sometimes during the week, I would just, well, disappear basically. At least from my family, I would send them a message usually after I leave. Just to let them know that I wasn't kidnapped or something.

Most of those times, I was hanging with Roy Harper, who was quickly becoming a great friend to me. When I wasn't helping him patrol or on some of his missions, he showed me the world.

With the money we managed to get, some from Bruce, even though I didn't technically have proof it was Bruce we knew he was giving me money for the times I was out, he showed me how fun the world was.

From ice cream to even an amusement park once. He showed me cotton candy, ice-skating, and was a really good big-brother actually. He also understood somehow.

Of course, Dick tried to do those things with me too. But sometimes, it was a bit more restricted because we all agreed that we didn't need the press at this moment until Bruce came up with a good background story.

It was during one of the times I was crashing at Roy's that I went with him on this mission he was going to do.

We were going to save this lady scientist from this compound, Roy had knocked out the first guard and got his grapple arrow ready so we could both head up to the roof.

With that, we both snuck in and I took out the next guard with my new and improved bo staff that I had been using. Dad had someone who usually makes his weapons make it, it had electricity tipped ends that acted like stun guns and I could break the large pole apart to have two individual escrima.

Dick expressed his interest in the weapon and dad was already trying to make another pair for Dick, though the electricity in Dicks would shine blue instead of the deep green mine shone with.

With the guard taken out and my bo staff ready, Roy and I made our way through the compound and slowly disabled the cameras with a bit of computer programming I had done for Roy for his new improved arrows.

With the cameras on a loop, Roy and I took out two more of the guards as I directed him toward where the scientist should be held having memorized the layout of the building quickly before the start of the mission.

We found the right room quickly and took out a few more guards before Roy knocked on the door heavily without saying a word.

Calmly waiting until I heard footsteps move, I gave a nod to Roy who instantly kicked down the door and hit one of the bodyguards in the face while I stunned the other one with the tip of my bo staff that blared with electricity.

"Doctor Roquette?" Roy asked as he moved toward the computer programming. I slid in the seat that the doctor just left and started to hack the files and put them on a thumb drive quietly. I knew that we didn't have time for me to destroy all the files so I did the next best thing, I copied them while Roy talked with the doctor.

"Tell me you're the advance guy," the doctor said.

"The only guy," Roy said, slightly stern and more neutral in talk than when he's in civilian mode.

"You couldn't bring backup? What, were there budget cuts? Had to take a kid with you instead?" she half snarked, half angrily said back.

Roy seemed to ignore the kid comment while I rolled my eyes at the naive woman who practically screamed that she knew everything.
