I slowly unlock the main doors to the school, with a bobby pin. Cole stands over me, his right leg bouncing, "What are you doing?" He asks, whipping his head from left to right.
"I'm picking the lock, what does it look like?" I ask.
"I... I don't think that's legal..." He tells me.
"There's a lot of things that aren't legal that people still do and this is the least bad out of all of them." I hold open the door for him, "Brains before beauty!"
He slowly walks in to the darkened hallway of the school and jumps when he hears the door close behind him.
"You alright, Rules?" I ask him.
"Rules?"
"Ya, you know, since you follow the rules and everything..." I explain.
I begin to walk down the hallway when I notice that I could only hear my footsteps. I turn around to see that Cole was glued to his spot, looking like we had just entered a haunted house. "Hey! You coming?" I whisper back at him. He looks from the doors to me and comes jogging up to meet me. "Glad you could join me." I state sarcastically.
"What if we get caught?" He asks nervously.
"Relax, we won't! Plus there's only one guard on duty and the school is huge!"
My last statement doesn't seem to calm him and even though we keep walking, I could still tell that he was bouncing his right leg. I become very annoyed with him and finally I reach over and take him by the shoulders and push him up against a wall. "Alright, you've got to calm down or we may actually get caught! I know this may be new and scary for you but you have to trust me and have faith that we will be fine! Okay?"
"We're not supposed to be here right now." He says looking around me.
"That's what makes it more exciting! Don't you feel the adrenaline?"
"I can feel myself getting kicked out of the school." He mumbles.
"Hey, look at you! You made a joke!" I say as we continue to walk down the hall and I lightly hit his arm.
"I was being serious."
"Ha. Funny!"
We continue to walk down the halls in silence and I can feel the tension growing. "So this is fun! Not awkward at all..." I say, very awkwardly.
"We could just leave." He mumbles.
"What?" I ask him.
"I said, we could--" I interrupt him by slapping my hand on his mouth, spotting the one guard that's on duty, coming our way. I move my hand and grab Cole's wrist and take him down a different hallway.
"Shh..." I whisper to him.
We both freeze and I stand right behind him, I can feel his body tense up. The hall we went down was a dead end so we had to hope to God that the guard wouldn't come down it. He stops right at the end of the hall and turns the other way, not spotting us. We both let out a quiet sigh of relief as the guard leaves the way he came.
I turn to Cole who slides down the wall and sits on the floor, "Do you feel it?" I ask him.
"My life slowly going down the drain? Yes, I feel it." He says quietly.
I sit beside him, "Not that! The beating of your heart in your chest." He sighs and I can tell that he's trying to calm himself and return his heart rate back to normal. "It's hungry for it," I whisper while leaning close to him and focusing on his blue eyes, "the excitement. It's dying to escape, it wants to be free."
