Chapter 24

There's a knock on my door, "Katniss?Its Haymitch?" "Yeah" I grunt "Cmon it's time to go?" I jump up "K I'll be there in a sec!" I pull on my jacket and boots and grab my bow. Yes! It's time to go! Time to save Peeta! Time to see him again! I turn, dash to the door and open it quickly. "Hi" I say to Haymitch "Hi? You ready to go" he replies. "Yup c'mon lets get going!" I choke at how cheerful I seem. Suddenly I realise that Gale's not here.."Where's Gale?" I ask quietly. "He's downstairs waiting for us so hurry up!" Haymitch answers annoyed. I gulp "Ok" We walk downstairs and to the reception. Gale sits on a armchair waiting. When he sees me he smirks and waves. I turn away and pretend I'm talking to Haymitch. Gale gets up and walks towards us. I stare at him while frowning. He doesn't take that I'm being mean because he keeps on smiling. Ugh he's so annoying! Gale stops inches from my face and I stiffin up. "Hey Catnip" Gale starts "How are you?" "Fine!" I snap "and how are you" "Good" he says and I can feel him move his hand towards my face. I stomp on his toes and push him backwards. "Stay away.." I hiss. It's a pity Haymitch didn't see anything because I would have liked to see him beat up Gale. Gale brushes himself off and walks towards Haymitch while giving me a dirty look. I smirk at him and sit down.
A few minutes later Haymitch walks towards me. "It's best to head out now, there's only half an hour until midnight cmon" We head towards the door and go outside, it's FREEZING!  In the corner of my eye I can see Gale shivering and I smile to myself. "So which way?" I ask, breaking the silence "Straight ahead," says Gale "I'll lead" I'm about to object but I'm not bothered to "Ok then wise guy!" I say immediately regretting it because I don't want to be nice to Gale in-case he gets any ideas. We walk for quite awhile but at 10 to midnight we finally arrive at the square. Last time I was here people were fighting like dogs and there were dead bodies everywhere, let's just hope there's none tonight! "I'll keep a look out" suggests Gale "you two hide in that bush or something." Gale points to the bush to our right and I walk towards it. Anyways I'd rather Gale get hurt than anyone! We crouch down into the leaves and wait. After about 5 minutes or so a van pulls up and two men dressed in black hop out. Gale dashes for a bush to hide in. He makes it just in time because when he crouches down one man looks in his direction. Phew! Haymitch taps me on the shoulder "Be ready.." he whispers "wait till they take out Peeta and then move." I nod my head, that was my plan anyways, you never know if they'll keep their promise or not. I check my watch, it's 23:58, two minutes till midnight. Suddenly the man nearest to us speaks "Where are the little brutes?! Their sopposed to be here at midnight?!" "Calm down Bruce!" Says the other man "it's only just turned 12 be patient!" Bruce nods "Should I take the boy out?" "Yeah," says the other man "set him up 'ere." Bruce walks towards the back of van and opens the hatch. There's muffled screams and bangs and he try's to pull Peeta (I'm assuming) out. "Cmon ya brat!" Bruce grunts "the girl is here!" Hearing this Peeta calms down and allows Bruce to pull him out of the car. My heart skips a beat when I see him. His clothes are tattered to rags and his hair is no longer bright blonde. On his arms and face are numerous bruises and cuts including a long gash that runs from his right temple to his chin and he limps at every step. "I'm sorry.." I whisper to myself while fighting back tears. "You can come out now brats!" Shouts Bruce and Haymitch taps me on the shoulder again "Be ready!" Suddenly Gale rises from his hiding place "Oi what do you want with Katniss?" He says very protectively and points his gun and Bruce and the other man. "We can't tell you," says the other man "your not Katniss?" "Yeah you wouldn't understand!" Laughs Bruce. Somehow through the bushes Peeta finds my eyes and beckons to me to run. I shake my head and stand up without waiting for Haymitch "Tell me then, what do you want?!" The men turn towards me surprised. "Ah Katniss..Hi I'm Marcus" says the other man "and I need to ask you something.." I look down at Peeta and he shakes his head "Give me Peeta first!" I say walking out of the bushes and onto the square "At ta ta!" Says Marcus "tell me this first." "What?!" I snap. "You see Katniss, our let's say technology supply is running low and we'd like you to tell us where the entrance for 13s underground organisation is? See not that hard!"  I gulp I can't tell them they don't want the technology they want the nuclear bombs supply so that they can gain power again. I look at Peeta for an answer. He shakes his head again. "Ok.." I say "Come here and I'll tell you.." Marcus walks towards me "The entrance to district 13 is..." I stumble for a minute debating what I'm about to do. I smirk at Marcus and swing back my arm. I scrunch my fingers into a fist. I throw my fist at Marcus's face and await one in return.....
