Jack's POV
I woke up to silence, an uncomfortable silence at that. I sighed to myself and rubbed my temples, my head was pounding. I sat up and sighed when I noticed I was in the guest bedroom again. I've been sleeping in here ever since Maddy told me about her and Chris' little argument.
I slid out of bed and stretched, before heading downstairs. I filled up Bella's food bowl and took some advil, looking at the time. This is probably the earliest I've waken up on my own since high school. It was 8am. I sighed again before grabbing my phone off the counter. I had one missed call along with one new voicemail, both from an unknown number.
I clicked on the voicemail and held the phone up to my ear as I walked into the living room.
Hello, Jack. My name is Tasia Young, I'm a nurse at Mercy Medical Center. I'm calling in regard of a patient here that goes by the name of Madison Allbourne.
I felt my heart drop to my stomach. Maddy. Maddy was in the hospital? But why? How? She's home.. Isn't she? "MADDY?" I shouted. When there was no response, memories from last night flew in my head. Our fight. Wait.. Did we break up? No, we couldn't have..
Look, Jack, you were the emergency contact in her phone, so we decided to call you first. I'm asking that you come in to talk to me about Madison by 8am of today.
Shit.
If not, we'll be calling the next emergency contact in her phone. It's serious. Hope to see you soon.
The line went dead and before I knew it, I found myself in the front seat of my car, backing out of the driveway. As I flew down the streets, I mentally punched myself in the face. This had to be my fault. Right?
~
"I'm Jack." I said, throwing myself into the front counter. Panting, I've never ran so fast in my life."I'm here to talk to Tasia."
A tall African American lady looked up at me, "Right this way, sir."
I followed her down a hall and she looked through her clipboard, "Are you her boyfriend?"
"Yes."
"Thought so. Alright," She looked set her finger on the paper as we walked, "Madison Grace Allbourne. She got into a fatal car accident last night. Swerved off the road and ran into a big willow tree."
"Is she okay?" I cut the lady off. She looked up at me then pushed a button on the elevator before going on with her explanation as if I didn't even ask anything. "She wasn't wearing her seatbelt and flew threw the windshield.."
My heart stopped and Tasia took a step onto the elevator. She motioned for me to follow her, but I couldn't seem to move. Maddy, Maddy was in danger last night. Because of me. Because I have been ignoring her.
"Someone saw her car on the side of the road and called, she was brought in at 4:10 am. About twenty minutes after the crash we've estimated."
"How is she now?"
"We don't know yet.." It was as if she stabbed me with each word. "She had split her head open during the crash, and was brought into the ER. They've been working on her since. It's possible she's back now, but she in no way can have visitors yet."
The elevator doors opened on floor seven. We walked into the little lobby, which was the waiting room of the floor I guess. I followed Tasia to the front counter. "When can I see her? And when will we know if she's okay?"
She shook her head, "I don't have the answer to either of those yet Jack."
"What do you mean?" My voice started to raise. She handed the clipboard to the lady behind the counter and looked at me, "The surgery is different for everyone. We don't know when she'll be available. But Rosemary, here, will let you know when you're free to visit. Until then, you can call her friends and inform them what I've told you. I'm about to go call her mother."
"Is she going to be okay? Please tell me she's going to be okay." I said. Holding back the tears.
Tasia looked at me, then Rosemary, then me again. She set her hand on my shoulder, "Please don't get your hopes up, hun. I can't make any promises."
I didn't respond, just sat down in a chair, and buried my face in my hands. That's when the tears flew down my face. It's possible Maddy won't make it out of this surgery. I might never see Maddy again. I might never hold her again. Kiss her again. Tell her how beautiful she is and how much I love her again. Laugh with her again. Play on stage with her again. Take walks with her again.
It's possible that I might have lost the love of my life on a bad note.
