CH 1 – Happy Birthday to me

The pillows perched under my head were flat, like it didn't even have any fluff in them. The beige duvet, covering my freezing body, were thin; as like the dark blue curtains hung to hide the morning sun. And it was morning.

I slowly got up from my crooked bed; it was always cold every morning. They never let the heat radiators on, and it wasn't only because they hated us. If I mean 'they', I mean the devil: Madame Reyna, the head of the Bristol Orphanage Programme. She was the most malicious woman I had ever met, and they only one I had encountered.

Oh yeah, I haven't introduced myself have I?

Meet me: Eleanor Lawrence. Wait. Scratch that: Ellie Lawrence. Call me Eleanor, you'll never see daylight ever again! Anyways, hi! I'm just your 12 year old protagonist in a story; I'm not anything special but any ordinary girl you see in the streets.

My life had been a hellish one, and has been at the start. It all started when my parents had died, I never knew them. It's just a miracle that I'm even alive. They said I was abandoned, left in a bundle of blankets wrapped around my fragile body. I was found on the dark mysterious streets of Bristol, and they sent me here. Whoever did, they had the wrong choice.

My hands struggle to grab my brush from my bed side table, the darkness still in the room since it was the middle of February. I finally got the small hair brush and started brushing my chocolate brown hair. It had travelled nearly all the way up to my waist, since nobody had bothered to cut. I didn't had the essentials to cut it either. But somehow, I loved it being long. After I brushed, I hop onto my bed again to scoot over toward the window. Smiling, I open the curtains widely. The sunrise had peeked over the tall buildings, the vibrant colours spreading across the blue morning sky. It was one of the things I loved to do, but today was even more special.

I turn to grab my iPad under the mattress of my bed. If Madame Reyna saw this, I'll be screwed. Luckily it still had a few batteries left for me watch some videos on YouTube. And where did I get an expensive tablet you may ask? They were anonymous. I found the iPad on my doorstep on my 6th birthday, and every birthday after that: I got more valuables which I hide from all the carers and workers in the building. I unlock my tablet, first showing the date on the top. I smiled.

"Happy birthday to me." I whispered to myself.

Even if no one had noticed my birthday, and only one cared about it, a smile is always on my face.

And it's because I know, this day will be special from any other birthday I had.
