CH 13 – Just a Nightmare (Special!!)
Blackness.
That was the only thing I saw, just emptiness of the world surrounding me. It was like it was encasing me with the cold and dark. I opened my mouth to scream, but nothing came out. My limbs: I couldn’t feel them.
I’m pretty sure I’m dead: a ghost floating in oblivion.
And yet suddenly, a flash of light blinded me like the sun I always had seen in the morning. I used my numb hands to cover my eyes, waiting for the light to dim. Eventually it did; I started feeling the motions of my hands moving and the flutter of my eyelids opening to see where was I.
And apparently, I was lying on the horrible cold concrete. My senses started to come back slowly, faintly scenting rotting foods and distinctive poop. I was in an alleyway, but it was unrecognisable.
The buildings between me were narrow and felt quite claustrophobic, my fear collecting in me. Flies were buzzing loudly above the large rubbish bins next to me, making me nauseous also. Where was I? How did I get here?
With my energy, I pulled myself up and balanced onto my feet. It was like I never walked before: my feet wobbling for a couple of times I tried to walk. Finally getting it right, I walked through the long alleyway and tried to find humanity. The sun was up and out in the sky, meaning it was already noon. I tilted my head back down to focus on something in the distance. It was figure, but it felt so familiar. Did I meet her before?
Immediately, I heard the figure scream – a girl’s scream – crying for help. Widening my eyes, I raced to the girl that looked older than me: who was scrambling away from another figure. I knew the minute what the figure was going to do: kidnap her. No sound came out from my mouth, like I had no tongue to speak with. I got closer to quickly glance at the scene. The man (I guees) had covered her mouth with some fabric, and somehow forced her to shut her energy and eyes. She was venerable, as was I.
I had no choice but scream.
“No!” I screeched, finally having a voice. The man turned his head at me, however just kept shoved the girl into the back of the black Toyota.
Suddenly, I felt two strong hands grab my hands, straining me from escaping. It was no use: he was strong and I was weak. One hand shoved a cloth into my mouth as I screamed again, but faded as everything went black again... only to have seen the bright scarlett hair of the teen beside me before I shut down...
Ugh! My head ached with pain and what felt like: needles poking me. My hand twitched slightly, as my feet followed the same movements. I tried to open my eyes but no avail. And somehow... I felt a hand nudging my shoulder soflty and a voice mumbling.
“Wake up, wake up.” A voice near me spoke. The voice... have I heard it before? Finally, I did open my eyes. I was lying on cold concrete, colder than the alleyway that I suspected to be the worse. No natural light was in the room, but a small hanging bulb on the ceiling. Looking towards my direction, there was metal bars built like a wall surrounding us like I was a caged animal. Where was I? Where did they take me? My anxiety started to build up, the panic rushing through my blood vessel. I looked around and noticed... I wasn’t alone.
There was a girl, the same one I saw who got kidnapped by those men with me. Her hair was awful, stringy and dirty: like it wasn’t washed for days. She was wearing a ripped neon jacket, black jeans, a green top and some converse. She was staring at me, her worn out sea blue eyes that stood out from her.
“You’re awake.” She said to me. “I thought you wouldn’t wake up.” What did she mean by that?
“How long was I knocked out?” I asked her.
“Nearly 2 days, or else they had to force you to wake up: which is bad.” The girl replied and shuffled closer to me. It was cold; just like it was back when I was in the orphanage. I studied the surroundings slowly and discovered that we weren’t alone.
Two children were huddled together in another cell, one was boy (the older one) and the other one was a younger girl. The girl looked no younger than 6 – half the age I am. Her blond hair had looked that it was overgrowing, hiding her face like curtains. The two were muttering things between each other, until I heard something getting unlocked. Everything went silent.
Large heavy footsteps came and projected, and finally revealing a figure: who looked not to us, but to the other two children. I faintly heard the girl sniffle quietly, sounding like she was crying.
“Quiet you little prick!” The man shouted, causing the boy – I guess the brother – to encase her more. I saw the boy glare at the man, but all they got was a cackle from the man. Dropping a tray onto the floor, the man strolled off and shut the rotting door behind him.
I looked back at the girl beside me, who was shaking her head in disappointment.
“I’m so sorry for them; they need each other, just like you and me.” What did she mean by that?
“What do you mean?” My vision suddenly started to blur out. What is happening? Everything faded...
“Aaaaaahh!” I screamed as I sat up straight from my sleeping position, my forehead sweating. Looking around my surroundings, I noticed that I was back where I was before: at Kaeyi and Martyn’s apartment. I heard the two cats meow at me, staring at me with their wide eyes.
Everything I saw and felt wasn’t real...
“Just a nightmare.” I sighed.
