211; Slippery roads 06/12
Today would be the day I'd win 200 grand. I'm a street racer. Today I had to race against the undefeatable champion 'Death Track' but I was undefeatable too. We were at the start; a girl standing between our cars counting down.
"3. 2. 1. Go" We drove off at the same time. It was late at night and there weren't a lot of other cars on the road. I was ahead. I saw him in the rear-view mirror and he started to accelerate. He was now driving next to me but soon he was ahead of me. Out of his car came an oily fluid that made me slip, crash into the street light and catch on fire.
I was writing down last night dream when I checked the time on my phone. I was already five minutes late to meet the other downstairs for lunch. I rushed to the elevator and pressed the 'ground floor' button. A few seconds went by and I reached the ground floor. The door at the right should be the cafeteria Stella explained us earlier. I rushed to the door. Before opening it, I calmed myself down. I opened the door and was surprised by what I saw. The cafeteria was packed with people. I spotted Cody waving at me at one of the tables. He was sitting with Dan, Nick and Stella. I grabbed something to eat and walked over to them to join them.
"I saved you a seat next to me, cutie." Cody winked. I chuckled quite embarrassed, reminded of what happened earlier. Both Dan and Nick looked at me questioningly. I sat down. My seat was opposite's to Nick's and next to Cody.
"I can read minds." Cody said out of nowhere. I looked at him in shock. So I didn't say that out loud. He chuckled again. "I'm sorry for causing so much confusion yesterday, Cam."
"How does it work." It was Dan who said that. "Like; can you control it or does it just happen?"
"At first I couldn't control it, then I came here and they taught me to. My sister can run really fast."
She looked at us and nodded slightly. "It's not as cool as Cody's 'power' but it's quite handy."
We all nodded.
"So what are your powers?" Cody asked enthusiastically.
"Oh, only Cam has powers, we're just her plus ones." Dan said.
Everyone stared at me. I looked down at my plate. Suddenly Cody took my hand. "You don't have to tell us if you don't want to." I stared at him for a while. He was sweet and caring. I saw him grinning.
"Please, stop reading my mind." I mumbled.
"Fine, I'll stop. It's nothing new anyway. Just thinking about how awesome I am. You really like complementing me, do you?." He winked again. I started blushing again. Dan, Cody and Stella snickered. Nick just stared at me. I looked back and his eyes snapped to our joined hands and then he looked away. I kept looking at him, confused of what happened.
Lunch went by fast and I went back to my room with Stella.
"So. You and Nick, huh." She was sitting with me on my bed.
"We're just friends."
"I can't read mind like my brother but I do know when someone's lying."
"Fine. I've been crushing on him for about two years now."
"And he doesn't know?"
"He probably just doesn't care. He's popular at our school you see and I'm a nobody."
"Then why is he helping you?"
"I have no idea. He keeps telling me it's because he wants to but I don't know, it's really unlikely he does."
She nodded understandingly. "Still, he looked pretty frustrated at lunch."
"He's been like that since I, euhm."
"Since you?"
"Since I dreamed about him." I mumbled. She looked at me; her eyes widened. "Oh. No, god. Not one of those dreams. It's more complicated than that."
"Please, explain."
"My parents died three years ago. Since that day, I've been getting nightmares. They're about people dying. I started writing them down in my diary. A few weeks ago Nick read it and did some research. Apparently one of them came true a while ago. We did some more research and found out a lot of them came true. Nick found this facility when we did research and we decided to give it a try. On our way here I had a dream about him dying." She was listening to me carefully. "I told him. At first he was really curious and helpful but that changed one moment."
"So all of a sudden he got like this?"
"Well, I needed some air and went outside. A few minutes later he joined me and we talked. One second we were laughing, then he looked at me rather strangely and then he got all distant."
"Wow. I don't think I can figure that one out." Stella stood up and walked to the closet.
"Maybe there isn't anything to figure out? It's probably nothing."
Stella grabbed a blueish suit. "I should go to the training center. I'll see you later?"
"Sure. I'll see you."
She opened the door to reveal Nick standing in front of it. Stella slipped by him and gave me this 'look who's here to see you' look.
"Hi."
"Hey. Come in."
He walked in and closed the door. "I'm sorry for being so rude."
"It's fine." I stood up. Nick looked me up and down and stared at me. I started doing the same; checking my outfit to see if something was wrong. He must've noticed.
"There's nothing wrong. You're just really beautiful." He said; looking me in the eye.
I puffed. He walked up to me and I took a step back. He looked down for a second, rather sadly. The he carefully took a step forward to me again. This time I stayed put. He grabbed my wrist and dragged me to a small standing mirror in the room.
"What do you see?" He asked; looking at my reflection in the mirror. All I saw was a girl with a way too pale skin, straight, dark brown hair and big green eyes next to a muscular guy with beautiful blue eyes and sand colored hair. The girl; dressed in black clothes, the guy; looking amazing with just a black shirt and jeans.
I didn't answer his question and looked at my shoes.
He answered for me. "What I see is a girl who has been through a lot and is still standing strong. A girl with a fair skin, straight brown hair and beautiful green eyes." He looked me in the eye. "A girl who could be the death of me, In figure of speech of course." He winked. He walked to my bed and sat down. I looked at his reflection; sitting on the bed. He looked back at me. He signed for me to join him and I sat next to him. "I don't know what's going on."
"What do you mean, Nick?"
"I thought I'd be scared and I'd hate you for dreaming about me but I don't. I am scared but I don't hate you." He said. I just nodded. He looked at the diary on my nightstand. "Is this the first time it's someone you know?"
"Yes, it is." I said. He nodded.
"Well, I'm glad I'm your first then." He winked at me, stood up and left the room.
