I brought the cold glass to my lips and took a sip of gin. My eyes watered as it stung my throat. I could already feel the alcohol taking me away, but it won't take me far enough. The music was subtle, but loud enough to mask the various conversations that ringed through the air. I sat at the bar, looking into the bottomless well of alcohol in my glass. I don't think I'll ever make it out of here.
"YuNa! Come here," my manager, JiSu, peered from the door behind the bar. What does she want? I'm on break. Nevertheless, I obeyed JiSu and nonchalantly walked towards her.
"Yes, ma'am?" I attentively waited for her commands. She stood on the tips of her toes to dust off a bottle of Cabernet wine.
"I need you to do me a favor after your break and go drop this off for me," JiSu shuffled through her pockets and pulled out a brown paper bag. I went to grab it from her hands, but she didn't let go. I looked up to meet her solemn eyes. "Do not lose this. It is very important to me that you deliver this. I'll pay you extra if you get this done efficiently. Be there at midnight," I nodded. JiSu always trusted me to deliver her personal items. She's like a sister to me in some ways; always asking for my clothes, calling me late at night, you know, the usual. Even though she's just my manager, she's so much more to me. She found me at age 15, homeless and hungry. She took pity on me and usually I never accept someone's compassion, but I was in no position at that time. She'd given me a job at the bar where I washed dishes and tables. It wasn't only until now that I started waiting and delivering JiSu's personal stuff. Although I am thankful for her, no person in the world can fix all of my problems. That day she found me 5 years ago was the only good day that I've had. I bowed slightly, grabbed the bag, and headed out of the bar. I looked at the package and read the address located on the back.
"Hm, this is a new place," I mutter to myself as I put the unfamiliar address in the GPS. Once the address was entered and the route was calculated, I started walking. Cars zoomed passed me and people bumped into me left and right. This is surely Seoul at night. I clutched the bag close the my body to ensure it's safety. The various smells of street food and smoke lingered in the air and the laughter of club-goers echoed. The lights illuminated the wet pavement and created dark silhouettes. I walked for about 10 minutes before it started to get quieter. Soon enough, the sounds of my heels click-clacking on the side-walk paired with the faint honks of cars were the only sounds that could be heard. I checked the time, 11:56. I started to pick up my pace in fear of being late. I checked my GPS which said I had 10 minutes left until I reached my destination. "Fuck," I mumbled under my breath. I quickened my pace once more and began jogging. My feet were screaming at me, but I needed to get this done for JiSu. Out of nowhere, a man in a red jumpsuit bumped into me and knocked me over, along with the bag.
"Sorry, miss!" He exclaimed, but he didn't stop walking to help me up. What a piece of shit. I gathered myself up and grabbed the bag.
"Shit!" I yelped. The entire bag was soaking wet and the contents broke through the fragile bag. It was scattered along the pavement and I started to quickly pick it all up. I hadn't even realized what it was until I gathered it all. My eyes slightly widened when I noticed I was holding approximately 54,557,500 won (50,000 USD). I quickly stuffed the money in various places on my body. "A few hundred in my pants. A few hundred in my bra. A few hundred in my pockets. That should be it," I said to myself as I stuffed and patted the money down. I discarded the tattered bag and began walking again. I'll be late, but I'm sure whoever won't mind. The money was stiff and poked me in all the wrong places, but I prevailed.
"You have reached your destination," My GPS rang in that same monotone voice as always. I looked around but I saw nothing but a few streetlights, a cat wandering the road, and an abandoned building of some sort.
"Is this damn thing broken? Am I in the right place?" I continued to look around for any signs that I'm in the right or even the wrong place. And just as suddenly as the jumpsuit man appeared, a car drove into a puddle and doused me in dirty water. "Are you fucking kidding me right now!" I screamed in frustration. Fuck this! JiSu can burn for all I care! I wiped the water from my eyes and looked at my destroyed clothing.
"Ehem, are you YuNa?" A man voiced from behind me. I turned around to face him. He was holding back a laugh, probably due to my state. I grimaced at his expression.
"Yeah, I am. Who are you?" I uttered. He held the door of the abandoned building open for both himself and me. He gestured me to come in, but I refused.
"Please come in. I assume JiSu sent you? I'm Kim TaeHyung," He smiled sweetly at me. I took his invitation and went inside. I was surprised by how nice it was inside. The windows were boarded up on the outside, but on the inside they were covered in lavish black curtains. The floor was a polished hardwood that went well with the black and white walls. There were green ferns and beautiful red flowers placed strategically throughout the common area. There was a large red sofa and a few matching plush chairs. TaeHyung politely asked me to remove my heels. I did as I was asked and I followed him further into the whimsical building. I ran my fingers through the plants and stopped to admire the red flowers that were featured throughout the buildings.
"They're red dahlias," TaeHyung said while he grabbed a towel from a closet, "Beautiful, right? They're my leader's favorite." I bowed and accepted the towel. I agree that the flowers were beautiful, but I questioned silently what he meant by leader. I heard a rumble of footsteps coming from behind me. Suddenly, a line of men appeared in front of me. TaeHyung stood up to join the 6 other men. As if they practiced it, they all bowed slightly at the same time. The tall man in the middle took a step forward.
