The walk back into camp was a long one. The two kept getting into wrestling fights, most of them ending with Scourge pinning Ashfur down. They padded into camp, laughing. Scourge noticed something wrong right away.
The scent of fire hit his nose, and Ashfur screeched. The camp was lit ablaze. Scourge's mind lit up with an idea. "This is it, Ashfur. Find her. Trap her."
Ashfur looked at him, bewildered. "A-Are you sure?"
"I'll be right behind you."
Ashfur gulped, and ran around camp, looking for Squirrelflight. She was nowhere to be found, until Scourge saw her scrambling up the side of the camp wall. He glanced back and noticed that was her only way out. "Ashfur!" Ashfur looked at Scourge and Scourge pointed out Squirrelflight.
Ashfur blinked and ran over, climbing up the rocks frantically. He snatched Squirrelfight's tail, and drug her down. She shreiked. "Ashfur, what are you doing?! I have to get out!"
Ashfur said something through the fur, but Scourge couldn't hear him. The fire was closing in, and Scourge realized they had to hurry. "Ashfur, hurry!"
Ashfur jumped up, grabbing ahold of Squirrelflight's back and pulling her over, both of them falling. They fell to the ground with a loud thump, making Scourge flinch. He ran over and the two were in an inseprable fight. No other cats were in the camp, thankfully. Scourge swipped, and hit Squirrelflight in the back. He struck again, being careful not to hit Ashfur, and hit Squirrelflight in the nose.
Ashfur finally pinned her down, one paw at her throat, the other holding her down at the hip. "What are you doing?!" She screeched.
"Taking my revenge."
"Why?! What did I ever do to you?!"
"You broke my heart, and forced me to live, watching you ll happy with him, and with your kits." Ashfur growled. "Had I not had to watch you every single day, it wouldn't have come to this."
Scourge watched from the sidelines, hoping he'd just end it already. The fire was closing in, Scourge having to inch closer to the two to keep away from it. He was coughing, his lungs filling with ash.
"I didn't mean to hurt you. I let you off easy. I could've just started ignoring you, and acted like you didn't exist."
"That's what you did afterwards." Scourge saw Squirrelflight tense, and Ashfur sunk his claws into her pelt.
"Ashfur, please! You don't have to do this..." She was shaking, and Scourge started to feel bad.
"Yes, I do." A smile broke onto Ashfur's face, and he was staring into her green eyes. Her eyes were wide with fear. Scourge swallowed.
"No, you really don't. Let your hate go-ah!" His claws sunk deeper. "Just let your hate go..."
Scourge couldn't help it anymore. "Ashfur." He called. Ashfur looked over, a confused look on his face.
"What?" He said.
"Stop." Scourge said.
"But... this was... You told me to..." Ashfur was so confused, he didn't even realize the fire closing in. Squirrelflight used the moment to scramble away from Ashfur's grip. She scurried behind Scourge.
"I thought you like seeing cats in pain?" Ashfur asked, puzzled.
"Only when they truely deserve it..."
"But she deserves it-" Ashfur was cut off by a small branch falling on his back, causing him to shreik and run behind Scourge as well.
Scourge's heart sank like a rock when he realized they were totally surrounded by the fire, all of them choking on the smoke now.
"Dear Starclan..." Squirrelflight whimpered behind him. Scourge swallowed. What to do? Scourge looked everywhere for an opening in the flames but saw nothing. Rocks and trees were faling around them.
"Squirrelflight!" Scourge heard a voice call. He looked up and saw a black she cat with green eyes. "Over here!" There was a tree that had fallen that had few flames on it.
Squirrelifhgt scrambled over, and lept onto the log. She ran up and joined the black cat. Neither of them looked back to the remaining cats in the gorge. Scourge and Ashfur ran up to the log, but the moment they got to it, it was almost completely engulfed in flames. He looked back at his best friend and saw tears stream down his cheeks.
"Scourge what are we gonna do?!" He shouted.
Scourge turned back around and stared at the ground for what seemed like forever. Either they try getting through the flames and risk burns or death, or just give up and wait here. Scourge snapped. "Come on!" He screeched, dashing forward and climbing the log. He heard Ashfur follow close behind. The flames were almsot too much for Scourge. His paws stung, his lungs ached, and his muscles were sore.
He felt light headed, but refused to give up. He could see higher ground, and made one final blind leap. He opened his eyes to realize he'd made it, and collapsed on the ground when he heard Ashfur land next to him. Ashfur nudged him. "We can't stop yet! Come on!"
Scourge forced himself up and they ran. They ran until they got to the lake. They turned around and collapsed. Scourge twisted his head up, and he could see the flames from where they were at. He coughed roughly, and looked over at Ashfur. "Hey... We made it." He croaked, smiling.
Ashfur was panting and didn't say anything, just nodded.
"You alright?" Ashfur nodded again.
Scourge wanted to pass out, but he knew they had to keep moving. They had to leave the Clans.
