Scourge pushed himself off the ground, nudging Ashfur. "We have to go."
"Go? Where?" Ashfur asked, confused.
"Away. Somewhere else. You won't last here anymore. Your little orange pansy's gonna tell on you, and they'll exile you anyway!" Scourge tried explaining.
Ashfur looked down, and Scourge could see the battle in his eyes. After a minute, his eyes filled with rage. "Did you plan this?" He growled.
"Wait, what?" Scourge didn't understand.
"Did you plan for me to get exiled? You are the one that told me to attack Squirrelflight..."
"I wouldn't do that to you. I truly thought you could do it."
"Yeah? Well, you were wrong." He replied, tears brimming his eyes. "I don't want to leave... I love Thunderclan..."
Scourge felt a stab of sympathy for the gray cat. He'd lived here all his life while he, he had moved around forever, as long as he could remember. "Ashfur..."
"I don't want to leave..." He repeated, a few tears staining the ground. "Scourge, please don't make me leave."
"I'm not making you leave. I'm trying to help you realize that now that you've made a move, Squirreldung is going to tell her daddy, and you'll be without a home. I'm offering you a lifetime of travel and love, alright?" Scourge gasped, realizing he'd let the word slip out.
"Love?" Ashfur asked, looking back up at Scourge. "Do you mean we're taking Squirrelflight with us?"
Scourge shook his head. "No, Ashfur... I mean... I mean I love you. More than anyone could ever love another cat."
Scourge saw Ashfur blush really dark, the shock widening his eyes. "R-Really? A-Are you... serious?"
"Serious as a badger attack." Scourge said. "I don't know if that's wrong, or if you aren't allowed to love a best friend, who also happens to be a tom. I don't know if it's wrong of me to make you run away from your home but your heavenly StarClan knows I've tried to stop loving you but I just can't and I don't know how you feel about that but good lord there it is."
Scourge felt tears in his eyes as Ashfur's face turned to one of confusion. Scourge reached forward and grabbed Ashfur's paw, placing it on his black chest. "Do you feel that? How fast it's beating? ...That's because of you. That's what you do to me everytime I see you."
Scourge expected Ashfur to run away, calling him names and leaving him to rot alone. He expected to see hate in his eyes, nothing but. All the rage in the world would fill Ashfur's eyes, and he'd leave, Scourge vowing to never let himself fall in love again.
But that didn't happen. Ashfur just stared, the blush not leaving his face. "I... Thought I was the only one..." He whispered, barely audible.
Scourge smiled, relief flooding his body from nose to tail. "...Then let's get out of here."
Scourge had no idea where to go. He wouldn't dare take Ashfur back to the place where he used to live. So for now, he figured they'd just head for the mountains. They had to stop often, however. Ashfur must have taken in more smoke than Scourge. His breath was much more ragged and shallow, making the need for stops more and more important.
They were almost to the mountains when Ashfur collapsed, panting hard. Scourge ran to his side, nuzzling his face. "Come on, buddy, come on, we've got this, we can do it." Scourge felt a huge pang of guilt as Ashfur didn't even say anything for several moments.
"...I... I c... c-an't..." Came the broken voice. Scourge fought back panic as he glanced around. A huge cave sat in the clearing several tail-lengths away, and Scourge's heart leaped. He bent down and grabbed Ashfur by the scruff, hauling him over as carefully as possible. They were maybe a tail-length away when Ashfur stopped Scourge. "I can walk." He spat, standing. Scourge gulped, letting him go, but staying close.
They made it to the cave, and they lied down right inside the entrance, Ashfur on the brink of consciousness. Scourge sat next to him, still fighting panic. He was trembling now. He had no clue what to do and as the realization of how dire the situation was struck him, his heart sank like a rock. Ashfur coughed weakly.
"What is it you need?" Scourge asked, hoping Ashfur knew something.
Scourge bent down, trying to hear Ashfur's reply. His reply came out as barely a whisper. "H... Honey..."
Honey? What good will that do? He wasn't about to argue though. "I'll... I'll find you some, okay? Just... Um..." Scourge looked back outside, and realized it was dusk. Damn it all! "I... Just... Just stay out of sight!" Scourge made his decision, and leapt out into the clearing, searching for trees that may have a bee's nest. He gulped and looked back at his friend. He had moved backwards into the cave a little, relieving Scourge a little. He smiled. "Be safe.." He murmured to himself.
He padded away, the cave becoming smaller and smaller behind him. He knew he should steer clear of ThunderClan, so he went east, unknowingly towards ShadowClan. He came to a Thunderpath and crossed it with ease. There, he came upon a line of trees. He walked along them, trying to ignore the foul stench that intruded his nose. He stopped for a sneeze, sitting down. He sniffled and looked up into the trees.
To his relief, there was a nest up there in one of the pines. His stomach dropped when he heard noises to his right. Oh no. No no no no no... Scourge gathered all his strength and started scrambling up the tree. He heard voices he didn't recognize as they got closer. "I heard something over here!"
"Rowanpaw, you're wasting your time, I didn't hear anything." It sounded like a patrol. Scourge tried keeping quiet as he perched himself on a branch, dangerously close to the bee's nest. Three cats came out of the bushes, a huge tabby tom, a small orange tabby tom, and a black she cat, right underneath the tree he was in. He held his breath, and looked down at them.
"Wait, she's right, Jaggedtooth. There's... Thunderclan scent here, but it's mingled with another scent..." The black she cat spoke up.
"Yeah, see?!" The younger cat exclaimed. "Someone's here!" The small tom was nudging the big tabby over to the edge of the tree. Moments seemed like minutes as the cat sniffed the tree.
"You're right.. It's fresh. He was just here." Scourge felt sick as the tom placed his paws on the tree, sniffing up the trunk. "Hey!" We know you're up there! Get down here and face us!" Scourge was battling panic again, looking back and forth between the patrol and the nest. He needed the honey in the nest! He-...
His mind whirled as a twisted idea came to him. "So it seems I've been found then." Scourge sat up and looked down on the cats, eyes glowing.
"Get down here! Don't make me come up there!" The tabby continued.
"Hey, I'm no threat. Quite yet."
"Who are you?" The black she cat stepped forward, shoving Jaggedtooth out of the way.
"My name is Scourge." Scourge hooked a claw around the top of the bee's nest, the part that holds the nest to the tree. "I'm sure you've heard of me." He stared coldly as he swiped, the nest falling to the ground with a soft crash. Satisfaction rose up in Scourge as the bee's nest broke, and he heard the buzzing of the bees, soon followed by the shrieking of the patrol as they ran off, trying to shake the bees off them.
A smile twisted onto his face as the screams left, and eventually, the night fell silent.
