Scourge woke up in the middle of the night by some noise in the nearby plain. He blinked the sleepiness from his eyes, carefully stood up and yawned, stepping out into the cool nighttime air. He took a deep breath, finding it refreshing. He glanced back at Ashfur fondly for a moment before sitting down at the entrance and staring into the night, trying to locate the sound. He couldn’t tell what it was.
Scourge’s eyes narrowed and he blinked in confusion. It sounded far off, but the noise was loud. Nervous, he slowly padded out into the field, keeping low to the ground. He hoped it was just pray, and he could have a snack before going back to sleep. The feeling in his stomach said otherwise, however.
Suddenly, a force hit him in the side and he was sent flying to the right, caught completely off-guard. He was pinned to the ground, but he didn’t fight back. He recognized the scent of an old friend. “Bone!”
Bone let Scourge up. “What are you doing here?”
“We’ve been searching everywhere for you.” He replied. He sounded… scared. “We’ve needed you back at Twolegplace.”
Scourge blinked. “What’s happening?”
“We don’t know. Cats are dying, Scourge, and we have no idea why.”
Scourge narrowed his eyes in confusion. “What…”
“We need you to come back and investigate. Please, Scourge, if anyone knows what’s going on, it’ll be you.”
Scourge was silent. he looked back in the direction of the cave and sighed. “My mate is coming with us, then.”
Bone dipped his head. “Sure.”
Scourge whipped around and padded back to the cave. Ashfur’s not gonna like this… He bent down and licked his mate on the cheek in an attempt to wake him. “Ashfur.” He whispered.
Ashfur moved slightly. “Is it dawn already?”
“No, but we have to go. Something’s happening in Twolegplace and I have to go inspect it.” He explained quickly.
Ashfur sat up and let out a glorious yawn. “What’s happening?”
“Cats are dying and no one knows why. Please, Ashfur, come with me, you might be able to help.”
Ashfur nodded and stood. “Okay, sure.” He shook out his pelt and padded into the night.
It was dawn by the time they got to Twolegplace. Scourge’s stomach turned as the familiar scents came back to him. Bone was in the lead, guiding Ashfur and Scourge who were walking side by side, pelts brushing. Scourge could feel Ashfur’s fear, and he respected how well he hid it.
They started getting to the community of cats, the cats greeting Scourge with relieved sighs coupled with fear. Scourge made it to the place where he gathered meetings and hopped up onto the large trash can, looking down on the cats. “I’ve returned because my deputy has requested my help. What is happening?” He simply asked, the crowd of cats below exploding into a frenzy of confused and scared answers. Scourge raised his tail for silence. “One at a time!”
It calmed down until one cat, Flame, stepped forward. “Yes, Flame?” Scourge called.
Flame was trembling as he spoke. “M-My… My mate…”
“What happened to her?”
“I… I don’t know… Sh-She…” Tears brimmed his eyes. “W-We went to sleep together… A-And… When I woke up, she… She was dead.” Silence swept across the cats as they bowed their heads in respect for their lost cat.
