"Coldrose, lead a hunting patrol. Take Ivyclaw, Silverpaw, Thrushfeather, and Creekwater with you," Frostheart said. Then he turned to Larktalon. "Lead a border patrol. Take Shadeblossom, Poppyfeather, Fernclaw, Mousetuft, and Mistfeather with you." He looked around. Not many warriors would be left in camp. Perfect for my plan. Frostheart checked to make sure Pigeonpaw was cleaning the elder's den, then slipped out of camp. He ran through the forest, keeping his ears pricked for signs of the patrols. He eventually reached a spot far into ThunderClan territory, and picked up the scent of fox-dung. He unburied the rabbit he had killed earlier, and he sliced it open. Then he found a sharp stick about the size of a fox tooth, and dug it into where he clawed the rabbit, making fox-like gashes. He threw it by the fox-dung. Sageweed, are you monitoring the fox?

Yes, she replied. You're good. Frostheart licked the rabbit blood from his paws, then buried the stick. Frostheart ran back to camp, and quickly burst in, scrambling over to Splashstar's den.

"Splashstar," he panted. "Come quick." Splashstar appeared immediately, and followed Frostheart without question as he took off running again. After all, he trusted his deputy.

Okay. The fox picked up the rabbit scent. It's heading that way.

Good. Frostheart reached the area, and Splashstar gasped.

"There was a fox here." Frostheart nodded, and growled.

"It killed our prey. We must stop it." Without Splashstar noticing, he stepped over to the nearest tree.

Keep stalling, Sageweed hissed. It's almost there. Frostheart thought he could detect a whiff of fresh fox.

"We should get a patrol right away," Splashstar said. Frostheart quickly blocked his path.

"Lets see if we can pick up the trail first," he suggested. Splashstar nodded.

"Good idea."

It's here! Sageweed screeched in his mind. Frostheart leaped up the tree just as the fox burst out of the undergrowth with a snarl. Splashstar yowled in fright and scrambled over to the tree Frostheart was in, and leaped up to the first branch. "Help me up!" he screeched to Frostheart, dangling from one paw. Frostheart sneered.

"No." He sliced Splashstar's paw with his claws, and with another yowl he went plummeting down towards the fox. The fox's jaws closed around him and he shook the ThunderClan leader, then dropped him, lifeless. Draw him away! Frostheart thought at Sageweed.

Shut up, furball, I'm on it. The fox pricked his ears at the sound of a vixen's bark, and scrambled off in that direction. Frostheart leaped down beside Splashstar just as he came back to life. Quick as an adder, Frostheart slit his throat.

"Why are you doing this?" he gasped, blood bubbling in his mouth. Frostheart chucked coldly.

"Because I want to be leader. You were a fool, Splashstar. You're weak. Everyone saw it, and ThunderClan will thank me for making them strong. You think Sedgetail really killed our deputies?" Splashstar's eyes widened, even though his life was ebbing. "No. It was me. It was always me. I killed Hopelight, Stormlight, Sagetuft, Sedgetail, and now you, Splashstar. And everyone is powerless to stop me! You better not tell anyone about this, or I'll kill your precious daughters." Then he clawed open his stomach, and made a deeper and larger gash on his neck. Splashstar did not get up again.
