December 4th, Sunday (The Next Day)
I looked up at the bright blue sky as I yanked my covers off of me. Then, I took a look outside, there was no snow on the ground. The snow must've already melted.
I fell asleep like a baby last night. When I came back home, well let's just say it wasn't fun...
Mama and Dad got mad at us for being almost an hour gone after Mama texted me. They were worried sick. I didn't want to tell them about what happened in the woods-we would never be allowed to go again if we did-but mainly because I feel like...Evelyn wouldn't want us to say stuff about her yet. So we came up with a fake, elaborate lie. We found a chipmunk that was hungry...yata yata. We were almost grounded if it wasn't for the fact that Mama was so excited about living here.
I sat there, laying down in my bed, wondering about school tomorrow. Will I fire out where my classes are? Will I make friends? Will I have to sit alone at lunch? The last thought almost made me shudder. I could never. I would rather eat in a classroom than sit by myself. I looked around my room some more.
Last night, after dinner, I started setting up my room to perfection.
It became gorgeous! It even had a little balcony for some fresh air! I breathed a small breath of happiness...
Then, I smelled something. Something delicious! It smelled like crepes. Gosh, crepes are my favorite breakfast ever... I hoped Mama had made those, even though she was probably still mad. I leaped out of my bed and headed quickly towards my phone, wincing at the slight coldness of the air. Looks like I'm still cold. I checked the time.
12:48 p.m.
Woah, I slept late! That explained why my mom was able to make crepes already. She must've gone out a little while ago to get food and ingredients for them and this week. I trailed out of my room, down the dark wood stairs. As I neared the bottom step, I realized everyone but Jake was here. Where is he? I walked to the dining room. It was lit up with rays of sunshine.
"Good morning, Mama! Dad, morning! Where's Jake?"
"He's outside playing! In the front yard." Mama chirped. She was cooking the crepes with chocolate chips and berries and cream happily.
"He's only five! How is he allowed to play outside alone yet?" I got slightly defensive, as I knew that when I was still very little, I couldn't play outside alone until I was 10.
"El, I never said he was alone." Mama spoke to me in a get-your-facts-straight tone.
"Oh, who's he playing with?" By now, I strolled over to the kitchen counter, grabbing a banana. I leaned over to the knife holder and grabbed a knife. Then, I began cutting slices for my crepes.
"Oh, this little girl. She looks a few years older than him." I almost chopped off my finger, then and there.
"Oh! Oh, okay, and just out of curiously...uh what's her name?" I secretly hoped it was Evelyn. I wanted to see what her story was. She was a bit too mysterious for my curious personality.
"Oh, actually I'm not sure. She wouldn't say. Kind of strange, but I want to meet her parents. You know, just to be friends since she seems to enjoy playing with Jake." I ignored my mother and thought about going to see Jake and most-likely, Evelyn.
"I'm just gonna go check in them. Be right back, Mama!" I put the rest of the un cut banana on a plate for later and rushed out of the kitchen. I grabbed my white, winters, coat, gloves, and scarf. I hurriedly placed them over me and jogged to the front door.
I creaked open the dark brown wood door. It opened silently, without a squeak or a creak. I peered through the small opening to see outside, but didn't fully open the door yet.
Sure enough, it was Evelyn. I wonder if she's still sad. I remembered that she seemed mad at us the last time we saw her. Wow, she forgives quickly.
I decided to walk out casually, as if having the mysterious Evelyn here wasn't a big deal at all. As I strolled next to them, Jake glanced at me and went back to playing with his green tow truck. Evelyn had another toy. It was a sky blue car with black wheels. They were pretended the car was stuck and Jake had to come and help it. Evelyn didn't look at me, but could tell that she knew I was there. They both shivered as a light gust of wind swished by. They were both wearing coats but the wind got through to them.
"Morning, Eliana!" Jake happily spoke to me, finally, after rescuing Evelyn's small car out of the dirt.
"Good morning, Jake! Morning...Evelyn." Evelyn peered up from there game and made eye contact with me for a split-second. I'm that split-second, I noticed a small ray of sadness in her green-blue eyes. After that, though, she was back to playing with Jake, ignoring my greeting.
At last, she spoke, "Good morning..." She stopped, and went back to her game, as though my name wasn't important to add.
"What are you two playing." I happily chirped, trying to lighten the mood.
"It's a tow truck sav-" Jake responded only to be cut off by Evelyn.
"A game." Evelyn rudely interrupted.
"What do you have to do?" I tucked my hand into my back pockets as I sat on the grassy floor with them.
"Well, I have to resc-" Jake started speaking but Evelyn stopped him a second time.
"Rescue each other." Jake and I looked at Eveyln. Rude, again.
"Well," I paused, a bit baffled at what she's doing, "Are you having fun?"
"Actually, I'm hav-" Jake started speaking, but again, Evelyn cut him off.
"Yes." Eveyln coldly stated. Why the hell is she being so rude!
