SHE PROMISED
( part one, chapter seven )

"HOLY CRAP, THOSE WINDS are hella strong!" Elle nearly shouted as she pushed the shutters of the window closed again. It was most likely the sixth time she'd done it in the past fifteen minutes, and it was starting to annoy her. If she had her magic, they would be permanently shut until the storm ended.

She looked over at Father Kieran, who had just passed a blanket to one of the many werewolves lounging on the pews. "Anything else I can do, Father?" she asked. She'd met Kieran only twice before: the first time was when he did the sermons for her foster mother's funeral, and the second time was when her and Cordelia had volunteered to help clean up the church after the massacre involving his nephew. She did not see him a third time for Joseph's funeral. Needless to say, each time she saw him, it wasn't under the happiest of circumstances, but she knew he was a kind man.

"Can you pass this out for me, Elle?" He passed her a large box of supplies including cans, blankets, and bandages.

"I'm on it."

She approached a young couple huddled together on one of the pews, handing them a large blanket to cover themselves and a can of food for each of them. They thanked the young witch and she moved on to the next werewolf. Her hazel eyes caught sight of Klaus and Kieran talking, while Hayley was staring off and watching the other werewolves milling about. Elle walked towards the pregnant woman saying, "Too much for you too handle?"

Hayley looked at Elle and gave her a thankful smile. "I can't believe Klaus did... this," she said, using one of her arms to gesture around her. She looked back at the young witch, smiling. "Thanks, Elle, for doing this."

"Yeah, well, my inner good samaritan was calling," Elle teased. "And Nik called in a favor; said it was for family." She saw the hybrid walk towards them and she smirked. "Well, speak of the devil and he really shall appear."

"These people, they're werewolves," Hayley said in disbelief. "And the priest, he said that you donated the food... You're helping them?"

"They're not just your werewolves," Klaus said, correcting her. "They're my clan, from very far back. They've fallen upon hard times, and their plight has brought out the philanthropist in me. What can I say? Must be Elijah's influence."

Elle raised a brow as Hayley asked, "What do you mean your 'clan'?"

"The blood that runs in their veins runs in mine. And in our child's."

Hayley looked overwhelmed. "This family gets more complicated by the minute."

"Tell me about it," Elle said, placing the box down beside her. "Just the other day, I thought I had gotten a hold on this family. I am just as lost as I was before." She pointed at Klaus. "Your family needs to stop growing, got it? After this little babe, of course." Elle moved her finger to point at Hayley's stomach, grinning.

Klaus smirked and looked at Hayley. "Listen, Hayley, word of advice when dealing with Elijah? Don't do as I do. Just apologize. He's accomplished in many things, but he is a master of forgiveness."

Hayley nodded at him and watched as he walked away, Elle following after him. She grabbed hold of his arm, tugging him towards her. "You're a good person," she told him with a smile. At the surprise on his face, a thought popped in her head 一 When was the last time called him a good person?

He cocked his head at her. "Tell me you're not just saying that," he said in a playful tone.

"Hey, I mean it!" She punched him as hard as she could in the arm (which wasn't very strong) and she laughed as he playfully winced. "I didn't really expect you to be donating food and practically begging me and Kieran to help with the wolves, but then again, I didn't expect my new friend to create a category four hurricane outside, so..." Elle leaned back on the wall behind her, crossing her arms. "You're not at all what I expected, Nik."

"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" He copied her pose. In his mind, it felt really nice to have someone call him Nik; it made him feel warm inside.

Elle smiled wide. "A good thing. It's definitely a good thing."

Klaus failed to suppress the chuckle building in his throat and Elle joined in, the two laughing at complete nothingness. His phone rang suddenly, making Elle jump and then laugh at her own anxiousness, and Klaus answered it. When he hung up about a minute later, Elle had her arms crossed. "So you're here to abandon me, are you?"

"I'm afraid duty calls," Klaus said, waving his phone before shoving it back into his pocket.

"All right, cool, so you are abandoning me," Elle said and nodded. She pursed her lips. "Hey, just... be careful, okay? I know you're immortal and all, but that doesn't mean you can jump straight into the fire. Just be careful."

"I'll do what I can." Niklaus gave her a nod in goodbye and walked out of the church, Elle's smile falling as he did.

It felt like something was pushing against her forehead, the back of her eyes starting to burn a bit as her vision blurred. One of her hands moved to tightly grasp her head, fisting her brown hair. She wasn't sure what was going on, only that it hurt bad.

"Just promise me you'll be careful!" a young girl's voice begged. She held onto her brother's hand, tightly squeezing it as she tried to tug him down to her level.

She saw a smile and felt a kiss on her forehead. "I'll do what I can."

Elle blinked several times, the vision 一 or was it a memory? 一 disappeared and she was back in Saint Anne's church. She let out a shaky breath, blinking again. What was that? "Maybe I'm just going crazy," she whispered and continued on with her duties.
