SHE PROMISED
( part two, chapter forty-seven )SOMEHOW, SHE HAD MANAGED TO SNEAK A GLASS of champagne past the adults, including her brothers and Hayley. She sipped at the bubbly alcohol and hummed to herself. Hayley and Jackson were before her, dancing their first dance as husband and wife, and Elle hoped that their marriage would be long and happy. Of course, she wished that Hayley would have ended up with Elijah, just so her older brother would be happy.
Elle had managed to snap a few more pictures of the bride and groom, along with some other guests. She was a bit surprised when she felt her phone vibrate and she reached into her bra, pulling it out. She read Kol's name on her screen, a bit confused but she didn't question it. "Hello?" she said, pressing the phone against her ear.
"Hello, sister dear," came Kol's voice but it was different. He didn't sound mischievous and happy; he sounded rough and desperate. He sounded sad. "I hope you're having a marvelous time at the wedding. Apologies I couldn't make it."
"Shouldn't you be saying that to Davina?" Elle retorted and took another long sip from her champagne flute. She placed the glass down on a table next to her and crossed her arm over her chest. "Where are you, anyway? And is Rebekah with you? She practically abandoned me."
"Yeah, she is," Kol replied and he was silent for a second. "I need to ask you something, Elle."
"If it's not to betray you, then yeah, I can do that," she almost yelled. She lowered her voice, not wanting to draw too much attention to her. "You know, 'cause I'm not like some people." Of course, she was still bitter and upset about the whole thing.
Kol made a chuckling sound, but it soon morphed into a heaving couch.
"Kol? Are you okay?" Her voice instantly filled with worry, her brows knitted together.
"Of course, why wouldn't I be?" Kol tried.
"Because you sound hella sick," Elle replied. "But..." She sighed. "Go ahead, and... ask your question."
"Can you forgive me?" Kol asked. "I know that it might be difficult for you to do right now, considering all that I've done, but I just need to know that you forgive me before I..." He trailed off and Elle could only imagine what sort of situation he'd be in right now. "I was a terrible brother, I'll admit that, and it wasn't something you deserved."
"Kol..." Elle whispered but he continued.
He let out another cough, this one not as long as before. "I just... I just need to know that I can be forgiven. If someone like me can still be forgiven."
"Where is this coming from?" Elle asked and walked away from the dance floor. She walked into one of hallways, away from the noise and people. She leaned against a wall. "What's going on with you? Are you in trouble or something?"
"What makes you think that?"
"Because you sound scared."
"Are you kidding me? I'm Kol Mikaelson, I don't do scared." Kol chuckles softly.
"I may be mad at you, but you know you can talk to me."
"I know," Kol said, his voice going soft. "But can you forgive me, Elle? Can I be forgiven for something so heinous as hurting my baby sister?"
Elle nodded, pursing her lips. "Of course, Kol," she said. She sniffled, and could feel tears in her eyes, but she wasn't sure why. "You're my brother and at the end of the day, I'll always love and forgive you."
"That's good to know," Kol said and she could hear the smile in his voice. "Thank you, Elle. I'll see you later, okay?" He sounded sad, like he actually wouldn't see her later. It sounded like goodbye.
The witch doesn't get a chance to respond as Kol hung up the phone. She stared down at the black screen, then looked back up. She places it back into her bra and walked back into the courtyard. She has to avoid people, walking around them and being careful not to step on some people's toes as she heads towards Elijah, who's talking Hayley.
"Elijah," she called and was surprised to hear someone else say his name. Rebekah had appeared as well, stepping towards their brother. She nodded at her (sorta) sister then back at Elijah. "We need to talk."
"Is something the matter?" Elijah asked then looked back at Rebekah. He still doesn't seem to recognize her in this body.
"It's Rebekah, remember?" Elle cleared up and instantly waved her hand. "But that's beside the point. I think Kol's in trouble."
"What do you mean?" Elijah asked and Hayley looked at her.
The hybrid asked, "Is something wrong?"
"Kol called me," Elle replied, "and he was talking hella weird. And I mean, weirder than he usually does. It was like..." She looked away. "It was like he was saying goodbye. Is he in trouble?"
Elijah looked at Rebekah, who immediately looked down at her shoes. "Did Kol not tell you?" he asked and Elle shook her head. Elijah look over at Hayley and asked to be excused, and when she allowed them to, Elijah pulled his sisters away from the crowd.
"Elijah, what is going on?" Elle asked. She looked at Rebekah. "Where is Kol? Is he okay?" Her breaths started to come out in panicked gasps.
Rebekah bit her lip. "What did Kol talk to you about?"
"He asked if he could be forgiven," Elle said and shook her head. "Look, I don't know what that has to do with anything but if Kol is in danger 一"
Rebekah cut her off, placing her hands on her sister's shoulders. "Finn hexed him."
It felt as if all the air had been sucked out of her lungs. "What?" Her voice was barely audible.
Elijah nods, his face solemn. "He's going to die tonight," he asked, "isn't he?"
