"Sophie!" Maya immediately spotted her, waving both hands in the air.
The crowd of students going to class seemed to ripple, all heads turning to both of the girls.
"Coming," Sophie mumbled to her, keeping her head down.
Whispers threaded through the air from around them, every person itching to see the girl that had kicked Keefe Sencen...and disrespected their golden boy.
"Ugh," Maya moaned when Sophie got close to her, attracting curious guys' gazes. "We have math first."
Sophie only shrugged. With a photographic memory, she was great at math, and it was all just really easy. Even at a school for accelerated students. "It's not that hard, I guess."
"But I'm half asleep," her friend protested.
"If you want, I can tutor you," she offered.
Maya's eyes went wide at that. "No way!"
"Then come on, then," Sophie said, taking off to the class.
Maya followed reluctantly, complaining the entire time.
...
The day was frustrating. Keefe tried to corner her alone whenever he got the chance—like he was some sort of creep. He'd been begging for her to hear him out.
Sophie had repeatedly refused, knowing that she couldn't afford to let the curiosity take control; it would end up with her forgiving him. The truth? She didn't want to. She didn't want to get back tog—well, she did, but she was more likely to get hurt again, which was bad.
Ugh.
Her life was so confusing. She'd thought that she was finally over Keefe, and had come to the Forbidden cities to get away from all of the things that reminded her of him. And then, there he was. In all of his glory, sending all of her feelings rushing back from where she'd banished them to.
But when she opened her locker, a note fluttered to the ground in familiar writing.
Sophie-
Please, hear me out. I promise that there's a good explanation for this all. Just, please. Meet my this afternoon under the bleachers.
K.S.
Sophie stifled a groan, knowing that she was bound to cave sooner or later. Might as well be now...right?
But under the bleachers, really? It was basically a high school place for kissing. Seriously. It's like Keefe was asking her to be his girlfriend again.
Only this time, she wasn't going to blurt a yes.
Unsure, she resolved to crumple the note and go to Maya for advice. Her new friend seemed to have a pretty good head on her shoulders.
...
"So, um, can I ask you something?" Sophie said tentatively. It was lunchtime, the only time she could talk to her friend without interruption, or eavesdropping.
"Duh."
"Keefe left a note in my locker."
"A note?" Maya turned to face her, signaling that she was now at attention. "What did it say?"
She sighed, passing it over to her friend from her pocket. "Should I go meet him?"
Maya thoroughly examined the note, scouring it from all different angles. Her nose wrinkled. "It must be something serious if he's willing to go this far."
"Go this far?" Sophie echoed.
"Well, yeah," she said. "No way would Mr. Popular ever be caught dead leaving a note in a girl's locker."
"I'm so special," Sophie only mocked, her voice dry with sarcasm.
"I think you should go," Maya advised, catching her off guard.
She wrinkled her nose. "You think? Why?"
"It's got to be important if he's risking his reputation for it," her friend pointed out. "Besides, aren't you the slightest bit curious as to why he's so desperate to meet you?"
"Fine, I'll go," Sophie conceded. "But...can you come with me?"
Maya studied her face. "You want me to go?"
She shrugged. "Just to make sure he doesn't try anything...and that I don't end up giving in when I know that it'll hurt me later."
"Well, then, Maya's on the job."

Author's Note-
Hey, you guys. I feel like it's been a while. (Not really, but it feels like it to me. Dunno why.)
Just wanted to ask what you all thought about some things:
1) What did you think about the plot twist that started this story? Would you have preferred it now to happen?
2) I'm thinking about doing another book for this series, which I have yet to name. It would be about how Sophie lasted this six years in between this and Set A Torch. How she lasted without Keefe. Do you think it's a good idea? Also, what would you recommend this series be called?
Thanks so much for reading. Please vote, comment, and share.
