Chapter 16-

Sophie lay awake for hours. And hours. And, can you guess, more hours!

What if Keefe had changed his mind about her? What would she do then?

The worrying was really killing her. It needed to stop.

With a sigh, she reached out as far as she could with her mind, imagining Keefe in his room, sleeping peacefully.

Keefe?

She detected movement from the other side and immediately latched onto it, feeling surprise prick her temples.

Sophie? What are you even doing up? Keefe asked through their connection, his bleary mind trying to piece it all together.

I...had a change of thought, she told him through their linked minds.

What kind of change of thought?

I...I'll try being your girlfriend if you want, if you still want me.

Silence. Sophie used up almost all of her willpower trying not to read his mind without his permission, barely holding on.

You will be? Okay, then. Don't worry, Foster, I'm all yours.

She could just see him winking flirtatiously. Ugh.

Wonderful, Keefe.

Something rushed through Sophie all of a sudden, something that would've made her stumble if she'd been walking. Like, almost fall.

What the heck?

Panic pulsed through her as she frantically tried to guess what the strange feeling was.

It seemed desperate, longing, yet at the same time, almost hungry. But it was warm—something Sophie normally felt when the emotions were positive unless it was angry.

Massaging her temples, she shook it off, deciding that it wasn't worth the worry.

Foster? Is everything okay over there? Keefe's voice sliced into her shaken haze, clearing everything in her head.

His voice, his voice, oh god. It calmed her instantly, absorbing any sources of panic from her.

I'm fine, Sophie eventually managed shakily. Fine.

No, you aren't—we're talking about this tomorrow at school, he insisted.

Then everything clicked in her mind, giving her a blinding realization.

She was in love with Keefe Sencen, her first boyfriend.

It was kind of obvious, now that she thought about it. Sophie had been saying that Keefe was her first love in arguments without realizing it. She'd said it to Maya, the first time she'd explained it to her, hadn't she?

Darn it.

She was in love with Keefe Sencen.

Now the better question: was he still in love with her, like he'd said all those years ago?

And if he didn't—what would she even do with herself?

With immense courage, she let her mind reach out to his once more, this time to ask. Keefe?

Sophie?

Is it okay if I ask you a question?

Hit me with your best shot.

Is it okay if...I...I read your mind while you answer it? I need absolute conviction here.

Whoa, Foster. Is it really that important? I mean, can you even do that from wherever you are?

Sophie let out a soft sigh, shaking her head to herself. Yes—to both of those. So?

I'm kind of scared of this question, but...ugh, I already regret this, go for it.

With that, Sophie slipped into his mind, astonished to be overwhelmed with the flurry his mind was in. Keefe! Calm down, I'm in, calm. Be placid as a plate.

[A/N I couldn't help myself, sorry guys, that was so cringey]

At the stupid phrase, his mind composed itself, strangely enough. She would never understand just how much humor affected him.

Okay. The thought resonated from him.

Okay, here goes, Sophie transmitted, even her mental voice filled with nerves, giving away her anxiety. She knew he would think something in response to that given the chance, so she pushed the question out before she could regret it. Do you still love me?

....... Foster, love, I never stopped.

What's up, guys? So sorry for not updating last Friday with the dance and all. Which is why I'm surprise updating right now XD. I feel kind of bad about putting it off, and also: my Thursday has been a pretty long day, I just want to curl up with a good book. I thought I might as well brighten your day while I'm at it, right?
