For anyone who knows me as a reader, will know that I can be quite the picky one. While I don't judge a book by it's cover, what I do judge them by, are the words. More specifically, the first several paragraphs. If an author can captivate me quick, I continue forward. If not, I put the book down. For the author of CHEATING DEATH, I was hooked from the very first sentence.
Intelligent and predictable Alice Porter had her life planned out. Her boyfriend Michael Clifford however, liked to indulge in the sins of the world. While their relationship was the most adventurous part about her, Alice was pretty content with life. But when a charming boy with "messy blonde hair, wide blue eyes," (ch. 1) steps-I mean breaks, into her room, Alice is thrown into a whirlwind. However for her, that's not even the worst part. Her death is imminent, and as an employee for the Grim Reaper, Luke Hemmings' sources seem to be credible.
Although he works for death himself, Luke claims to have a heart, and makes it his mission to save Alice from a terrible fate. Reluctantly, Alice lets him rescue her, and from there, it's a whole lot of bickering. I mean, I'd be pretty upset too if I had to drop my seemingly normal life, accept death, and then embark on an endless road trip- sounds a little like the last Harry Potter book to me. But what CHEATING DEATH and JK Rowling's "Deathly Hallows," both have in common, is that love is a powerful idea.
To be honest, paranormal stories don't intrigue me as much they interest others. But what I found so different about this story, is the human qualities possessed in Luke, even though he's a supernatural being. He's able to feel emotion; he knows happiness, he knows pride, and he knows pain. Mixed together with Alice's headstrong character, the two protagonists make quite a dynamic duo.
CHEATING DEATH instigated all the feels as I read. It was the perfect combination of witty dialogue, cute bits, and enigmatic moments that made me sit and contemplate character motive. The story's pacing is excellent- fast enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, but cushioned with time to let it all sink in. It's an ongoing story, and I'm pumped to read what the author has in store for the rest of the book. Check it out, and strap yourself in for an adventure that even has Michael Clifford holding on for his dear life.
