I often search for POC stories to read on Wattpad. Sometimes I filter through pages and pages, switching up tags to find books containing characters who aren't the typical fair-skinned, blonde hair, blue eyed girl we're accustomed to reading about. When I find a book that not only has a POC/WOC character, but is also well-written, I feel like I've hit the jackpot. KIA KAHA is one of those thrilling moments.
Set in New Zealand, we follow the journey of Calum Hood as he ventures to the country on his own. Forcing him to face his culture, and the colorful heritage his family easily embraces, Calum is reluctant to do so on his solo trip to the motherland. He meets Anahera, a loud, outgoing girl who loves to laugh, and mostly is a girl fully immersed in her Maori culture.
With rolling hills, "oak wood trees, and wild forests of natural habitats," (ch. 3, toru), Waipu is a charming, remote town miles and miles away from the city. It is in that small town, where Calum meets a close knit of Maori people. However, he doesn't make the greatest first impression and in the duration of the story, he is faced with the mission to reverse his offensive habits.
KIA KAHA is a brilliant tale with a unique plot. It focuses of the ideals of family, and the deep roots in which culture drives a dynasty. It's a coming of age book with an emphasis on discovering oneself, more than finding romance in a small, New Zealand town. The author paints a beautiful picture of friendship and the Maori culture, chapter after chapter. If you're in the mood to read a sweet story with captivating emotional detail, then definitely check out KIA KAHA.
