I've always been fond of stories that are inclusive, which is why I have a whole section dedicated to books with POC characters. But there's more to inclusivity that just showcasing characters who aren't the typical fair-skinned, blonde haired types. Religion, sexual orientation, mental illness, and of course, developmental disabilities are all real traits that should be represented in media- even in fanfics on Wattpad.
This is where YELLOW comes in. It is a beautifully written story about Harry Styles, an autistic father who joins a local book club in order to fulfill a requirement for school. There, he meets Iman Doyle, a lovely, kind-hearted woman with "light brown skin like honey kissing the sand of dunes," (ch. 1). Completely enthralled by her beauty and genuine compassion, Harry is quick to latch onto the girl- a trait that is rare to him.
Another girl who easily captivates his attention, is Myra Anne Styles. At four years old, she is a happy-go-lucky little girl who loves to play with her father. However, due to the unique way in which Harry's mind functions, his daughter's quirks, like wanting to hold hands or growing excited over Spiderman plates, is just another entity to work around. With the help of his supportive parents, big sister, and his close friends, Harry is able to further connect with his sweet daughter. And additionally so, create a special bond with Iman.
YELLOW is a seriously underrated book. I believe that it has the potential to garner millions and millions of reads, plus a movie, and a television show. The author's impressive storytelling skills, has built a world that evokes an unprecedented emotional expedition. Through the eyes of unique characters who possess an organic essence and voice, we are granted the luxury of reading a story with such raw moments, it opens up the floor for discussion.
There is nothing in this story that romanticizes the struggle of a man with a mind that operates on a different area of the spectrum. Everything feels so real, and completely demolishes the definition of what it means to be considered a fanfiction. While Harry does star in this story, I feel like it's a book I could find on the shelves of a chain bookstore. YELLOW is one of my favorite tales here on Wattpad, and I would love it if everyone took a chance and read it too.
